Hi Folks,

I'm looking to pick up my first pump shotty and I'm overwhelmed with the choices.
Looking online helps but only so much but I can pick them up and shoulder them, so I stopped by wholesale sports to try on a few.

The 870 express was only $340 but it felt "rattlely" and I didnt love the bead sight, a stevens 350 for $230 was nice but kinda heavy, weatherby 459 for $470 was cool I loved the sight, the mossberg 500 tactical was cool--6 position stock, then I held the bennelli supernova at $750 it was pretty as hell and felt good but it beats the hell out of my firearms budget.

I wanted to try on the winchester speed pump $370 but they didn't have any.

Anybody have any advice? I'd prefer 18 inch, black syn stocks. I'd use it for range fun, home defense and maybe gopher or rabbits at 40 yards or so.

Try to find an older used Winchester Defender in nice shape for around 300-350 bucks. I've had a couple blued/walnut ones and still have a polished stainless Marine Defender. Not too many slide action shotguns out there that work as slick as those Winchesters.

If you think you'd ever use it, it seems far cheaper to buy a combo set with two barrels than to buy a second barrel later.

I bought a Maverick 88 with an 18.5 barrel and 28" barrel.

The 18.5" barrel is great for carrying in bear country, camp gun, range fun etc. The 28" for duck hunting, skeet shooting, etc.

If I got to do it over again I'd probably buy a Mossberg 500 combo instead. The safety location is a little nicer and the trigger components are supposed to be higher quality, but it's not much more.
