Any advice would be appreciated.

If the VX3 is a little bit out of your price range take a look at a VXII I have several of both lines of scopes and it is very hard to tell the difference when looking through them. A 2-7x33mm scope would also be a very good choice of magnification. Also don't rule out Leupold's line of fixed power scopes. Variable scopes can be more versitle, but I know people who have hunted their whole lives with Leupolds FX scopes and not had a problem.

I have a couple savages now and love them. The latest one bought is a model 111. The 111 or hunter series rifle from savage is a less expensive model the others sacrificing quality of wood in the stock to bring the price down. If you aren't dead set on the stainless/synthetic combination then take a look at these, if you are interested in saving a bit of money. They go boom just as good as the other models.

As far as Caliber choices either of the ones that you mentioned would be great for what you described. A couple nice points for the .308 or 30-06 as well as several others is every store carries those calibers. Walmart, Crappy tire, and any hunting store.
