Just wondering if any of you have come across anything like this before -

A Webley Mark 1 issued to a regiment that fought in the Boer War (1st Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry) right at the start of the war (October 1899).

I've seen quite a bit around on actual firearms confirmed to have been used on the Boer side, but very little on guns that were confirmed to have been used by the British (individual guns - not makes and models).

...snip...

I have a Colt New Sevice engraved on the trigger bow to a member of "Paget's Horse".

This was a British militia unit raised specifically for the Boer War, and the serial # places the shipping date from @1899-1901.

I recently purchased a Colt New Service which I believe was part of the Canadian orders specifically for the Boer War, but need to send away for the Colt "Letter".

It does not have any Canadian property or inspection markings, but the serial is well inside the known & published Canadian serials.

I recently saw a LEC that was apparantly sportered by the Boer. The rifle had come to Canada with a South African Family. I told the owner to get some provenance (sp?) if possible.

The Brit markings had all been scrubbed.

Cheers
