Hi all,
looking to start shooting again and would like to try the shotgun sporting side of things. I live in Aldergrove and would like to recommendations on which of the clubs in the surrounding area would be good for a beginning shotgunner like myself to join.
Thanks for any input
Andre

You can go to Mission Rod and gun club, they have skeet and trap. PoCo has some trap. Pitt Meadows has Trap and Skeet. Vancouver Gun club has trap, skeet, sporting clays, 5 stands and international trap.

Your pick

I believe Vancouver Gun Club is the only "shotguns only" club in the Lower Mainland and is a great place to shoot, pick up some pointers and meet some new faces in the sport. Although there are a few clubs that are closer if your serious about shooting I would highly recommend this club. Other clubs listed above are great too but VGC would be my recommendation.

if you are looking for someplace with lots of trap shooters, it's worth the trip at least for the first bit to go to the vancouver gun club. be forewarned: there are a large number of members that will tell you that you are not allowed to have a tactical (read: black or shiny) shotgun at the club. this is FALSE. there's a lot of members there that get all offended if you bring a pink shotgun too :D :D

langley rod and gun club was *very* unfriendly - would not recommend (which is a shame because they are closest)

if you are looking for a place that is practically empty, you can head to the abbotsford fish and game club. i believe trap sundays is every 3rd sunday, and turnouts have been historically poor (= very little waiting, very little "advice" unless you want it)

heard mission is good for local trap, but haven't been out there yet.

For VGC, there are a LOT of shooters, and I don't think there is a comparable sporting course anywhere in BC. Also 5stand. Check out the Calendar for the timings (it's updated basically weekly, so you can see tournament listings/etc).

While you can have a tactical looking shotgun, the board recently passed a rule outlawing barrels less than 22". This is the current rule. There are a few people who bring pink and purple shotguns, never seen anyone get offended but it wouldn't surprise me given the overall demographic of trap in general (read: old and crotchety); but all are welcome.

Thank you Pakiji for clarifying "tactical" vs accepted barrel length etc. General idea of the rule is for safety purposes, also included in this is rule is ammo. Along with no barrel lengths under 22" the club also has a rule for no buck shot or slugs "I think they go hand and hand with TACTICAL LOL." I believe the largest shot size allowed in 7 1/2 target. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, looks like i have a lot of driving to do to check out the various clubs.

Buck and slug would be too far for "danger range" for Vancouver Gun Club range, AFAIK. Both range CFO's, membership and RSO's would probably freak if someone dumped some buck/slugs. I'm in favor of tacticool shotties, but if I were an RSO there I'd ban someone for doing that: no backstop.

VGC is fantastic for shooting clays, and learning to do bird hunting. If you sometimes want to shoot slugs or buck, then maybe POCO is a great "do everything" club.

In addition to no backstop, the other issue with buck/slugs/larger than 7 1/2 shot (max allowed) at VGC is that the sporting course and the trap fields/skeet fields are directly across from each other, firing at each other across a large enough space smaller shot won't make it. If you shoot slugs from the trap line you may kill a sporter because it will carry the distance :( or vice versa (sporter killing a trapper). There aren't enough clays enthusiasts that we can afford to eliminate each other.

Several new shooters have used slugs ON THE TRAP LINE for a maximum of one shot before they were stopped, and yes there was much freaking out (as there should be). Thankfully, no one has been hurt. Also hunting loads seem to crop up now and again.

I just read the rules on the VGC website and it's no barrels shorter than 21" (http://vancouvergunclub.ca/rulesfaq.php). There also appears to be a ban on guns without "shoulder stocks", I think this means fixed stocks only, no folding stocks or pistol grip only "shotties."

I believe the barrel length restriction is due to the noise, as far as I am aware, not for safety. If someone on the board knows differently please post a correction. Prior to the latest ruling it was only skeet that had the no-short-barrels rule because loud guns are made much worse by the echoes off the skeet houses. That said, there is certainly an assumption made by some of the longer term members about the safety-mindedness of people shooting "tacticool" guns; I think this is generally an unfair attitude but it has prevailed for the moment.

Just came back from VGC after shooting my first 3 rounds of trap. Awesome fun. Very friendly and helpful staff at VGC. Gorgeous day to be out shooting. $15 day card, $6.50 per round (25 clays).
