Just to clarify his background is Silat, JKD, Arnis/Escrima/Kali for a lot of his teaching. That isn't MMA but I get what you're asking. I'd Google these terms and check your area for these arts: Silat, Jeet Kune Do, Arnis De Mano, Escrima, Kali, Krav Maga. There are lots of other arts too, all branches from the same tree. I spent about 15 years heavily in this pursuit and it goes hand in hand with firearms.

Did some Googling and you're in luck, Durham JKD in Pickering.

Thanks. It looks like that one in Pickering is permanently closed as per review. But I found one in Scarborough called https://www.combativeconceptsama.ca/combative-concepts

Where do you train?

Oh too bad. I like what they offer there. If they do No-Gi Grappling (submission wrestling) I'd jump on that as well. I've taken some years off and now just work Use-Of-Force. I taught combatives at some clubs in the GTA in the past. My 2 cents is that as a single art Silat rules. If you can cross train grappling is necessary as a secondary. Edged weapon 3rd. Everything is an evolution.

I keyed on where he asked for survival skills but all arts ie branches of the same tree have value and anything MMA intertwined does teach you the value of hitting and getting hit. I’d say take anything and use what makes the most sense for that survival objective.

At different times I've trained in Wado ryu, Tae Kwon Do, Goju ryu, aikido, and then last, in Systema. It's the only one I'd consider now, altho in deference to poster above, I know nothing of Silat.

If no Systema, then boxing and wrestling and perhaps kickboxing.

If I had children i'd force them to train in judo for a bit, to learn how to fall properly without hurting themselves and to toss bigger bullies around.

Systema is an interesting art, I spent a few months in it. Very different from other arts. Boxing is a great starting point as is wrestling. Any art you can simplify and make work for incapacitation inside a close distance is worth doing. Before my current career I worked as a bouncer for 14 years, in that time I got to test everything I spent my teens and 20s studying. What I can say is that all the training and ability in the world are not as important as a violent disposition when opposition arises. That's something training can't give you. Combine both and you're effective live and not just in a safe space.

IMO…karate, ju-jitsu and judo are good skills to have

i ve done many years of ju jitsu and i do not like the brazilian version that it became. i used to train with the pariset brothers that imported in france the japanese original one.

i really like the ground works taken from judo which is the martial i started.

for karate i will add you need the ones that are training on impacts not the ones just for katas.

That would be a huge commitment and gamble. I am a firm believer of the Olympic Committee. Judo (best of the best and incredibly cheap). Wrestling (top best, too. If he's still in school for free, and relatively free if he commits). Boxing (cheap as well, and right at the top in many ways, but gets the head hit if not proper instruction)

If you don't/can't fully commit to mma, it will hurt you more than benefit imo

If you want him to get the best fast, then probably wrestling.

I am a firm believer in Muay Thai , but I’ve been watching the Beginning of the UFC and Hoyce Gracie was a beast.
He to took out some hard hitters

I just can't stand watching MT fellas get smoked with a simple short single shot. =)

Already love u, 45c. =)

My better half is Cambodian. of course so is her insane family. lol We fight allll the time.

Check out Bazooka in Scarborough.
It's where I train.

Lots of instructors are actual fighters so you gain the benefit of being trained by actual pros.

Plus, the owner Joe Valtellini is a Glory champion, their first hall of fame inductee, and does all of their ppv commentary.

He also shoots guns and is an extremely humble and friendly guy.

For self defence I think Jujitsu as most fights end up on the ground.

But jujitsu is only good for a 1 on 1 situation so if you got multiple attackers you’ll need some striking skills.
Muay Thai has some great and basic elbow/ knee and shin strikes.

Agreed most fights do end up on the ground, unfortunately in today's society the concept of a one on one fight no longer exists so being on the ground is a particularly bad situation. I studied Kenpo for 10 years, a great striking martial art and self defense, that being said instead of spending years earning a black belt in one style I'd take a bit from several styles. A mix of boxing/kickboxing combined with judo/jujitsu would be more functional than studying a single style. On top of that, cardio and more cardio.
