Any gopher shooters using the Marlin 795?

Hey guys~I hope to find myself laying in a gopher patch this coming spring/summer...at some point...and may bring a .22 with me. (to let the HMR cool down...hopefully I'm that busy) I had only thought the bolt guns would be good candidates for this role, but wondering if any of you use the trusty 795 for the job? Anybody running "hot" loads through them, or subsonic only?

I own a 795...and am considering buying a second one..so I'm familiar with them. But, being a clean freak with my guns, I've never run the thing all day....5-6 days straight. lol Trying some dry lube in it in the coming weeks, see how it goes. I suspect it could help keep the action/bolt face clean, and, easier TO clean when req.

Interested in your thoughts/experiences.

Thanks!

The 795 and the model 60 are a couple of the most accurate semi auto .22s for cheap, on the market. 1022s are not as accurate unless you're willing to spend money on them. The CZ 511 semi auto is better but costs $600. Not sure if the Marlins can handle a steady diet of Hyper Velocity ammo but regular High Velocity is fine. I find myself quite pleasantly surprised by mine. 795 and 60s are the same gun except one is magazine fed and the other tube feed. A few gophers are out in Alberta. Saw 3 yesterday but really expect to see a lot more come April. We've had a real mild winter bringing them out earlier than normal. Must call my Farmer friends soon to see who has some.

I used my model 60 a few times when I had it. Used mini mags mostly though. But truthfully I really only carry the hmr since I got my cz.

The plan IS to run my HMR almost the whole time...unless the volume of gophers (@ or under 75 yards) makes that seem like too $$$ a proposition. :) HMR positively SHINES in that role. Long shots? CRACKssssssPUH! lol

You know me; Marlin 60 all the way, though this year I have a Marlin 7000 that is going to be doing the duty alongside some single-shot centerfires. These days I am just using 555s or Dynapoints, thanks to availability- decent accuracy but it could be better. If I could get my filthy mitts on Mini-Mags, my groups would tighten up to dime-sized at 50 yards. I have had very good accuracy with Remington subsonics, but Rem ammo is so filthy I have to clean the guns when I get home, and it's a fight to do it. Winny, Feds or CCI don't burn anything near as dirty and I only clean the guns afterwards if I feel bored or want to have some zen meditation time. The 7000 doesn't get any cleaning, ever- I don't shoot rem ammo through it, and the manual specifically states it should not be cleaned.

They function perfectly and great accuracy makes for good days out on the prairie.

My Marlin 60 has also embarrassed a 17HMR shooter by knocking out a gopher in one shot offhand that he couldn't hit with three shots braced off the truck :)

Ya. Hardly use my ld's for anything but paper punching now. Going for gophers? Grab the hmr. Had to many running back down the hole with 22lr. Doesn't happen anymore.

Yeah, I think I'm giving the 22 too much thought. Just worried about big numbers and the HMR ammo cost. Good problem if I encounter it I guess..but the HMR is just too much fun on the little bas***ds. :)

Re Remington ammo. I am having great luck with the Remington Golden HP Bullets(bulk 525) from Canadian Tire(McLeod Tr). So far they don't seem any dirtier than anything else and are very accurate. I am constantly shooting them through my Marlin and Savage benchresting at the range and they have out performed Winchester Power Points, Winchester 333s and some Federal Bulk and CCI Mini Mags for accuracy. Needless to say I went back and bought a bunch more.

I just bought my 795 the other day. I'm quite impressed with it, to say the least! Also got a 4x32 bushnell and a brick of Federal Target Grade 40 gr solids, rings and a sling and only spent $230.00 . You canot even come close to that buying a 10/22!! 1/2 hour later I was rolling cans with it at 50 yard with open sights , which were dead on the money right outta the box I might add!! Should be a riot this spring for gophers!!!

Went and sighted in the new 795 yesterday and wow, done in 10 shots!! Didnt even have to use the windage just the elevation . Seems to like everything I fed it, stingers put out the largest group, fed american eagle hollow points won the day at pretty much one ragged hole. I like this gun!! trigger might need some tlc but all in all, good stuff!!

Nice! Just bought my second 795 this week, only in stainless steel. I've never owned 2 of the same model of gun before though...felt a little self-indulgent considering I only have one set of hands. :)

Sorry to go off-topic here but I cannot help myself. I am also located in Ontario but I cannot find a good place for gopher hunting. Which ones do you go to? Or you are driving all the way to Manitoba?

if you try lubing with eezox you will be very pleased, and likely won't gum up after 4 -6 days of shooting. It goes on wet, dries, and provides all the lube you need for the 22lr.

American Eagle 40gr's hp are some of the best gopher getters there are, they run clean, feed well due to the shape of the nose of the bullet, and are fairly consistent and accurate in most anything I and others have used them in. I have a few k, make that many k of cci all different flavours and use the AE red box 40gr for gophers as they are slow enough to open up just right.
