Many firearms with an exposed hammer have or had a half #### position, and includes both rifles and handguns. Should the hammer slip off the thumb, it fell to the half #### position rather than firing, but as stated above, if the trigger is in it's rearward position the piece fired. The transfer bar system does away with the half #### notch, prevents the hammer from falling and firing the round if the trigger is forward, and allows a revolver to be safely carried with the hammer down on a loaded chamber. In either system the gun must fire when the trigger in it's rearward position, making the transfer bar a debatable advantage.
