hey any fellas doing their own taxidermy or their own business?

i've basically just got set up to do my first heads, back yarding and slowly as i go,,,,

How was your first one, did it turn out sweet? did you learn alot just from that first one?

keeping it simple, , are you tanning your own? or have done? hassles?

do you put ear liners or use natural ears?

so many Questions, i guess as i get rolling i can post up a few pictures and stuff... lets see

I do it as a hobby basically to save the cost of having mounts done. I like doing deer mounts , I pickle the capes then shave them and then tan with liqua tan to preserve. I started out using ear liners but now seem to prefer tiger hair fiberglass for ears.
Lots of good info on taxidermy.net forum.
When I started I never shaved the capes just hand fleshed, I ended up making a fleshing machine and the thinned hides tan better and show more definition from the manikin.
here are a few pics of the flesher and a couple of my more recent mounts.
it's an addictive hobby good luck.

HGey mate- thank for dropping by!

Thats awesome, Nice work and a nifty looking flesher?!

prior to when you were not thinning the skins, was it noticably harder to mount the hide on to the form? is that machine basically a 'grinder' or sander, to sand down the hide per say?

thanks for the link , il have to check it out sometime especially if i get a few more questions!

before the fleshing I didn't know how much better/easier it was to mount, but I do now. The blade is specific for fleshing machines it has a sharpe lip that's approx. 90*to the main blade, you cut from right to left. Took quite a bit of practice to avoid cutting ones self and also ruining hides. A pretty good tip is some quys are using pressure washers to remove meat and membrane from the hide but it doesn't thin the hide.
