I was checking out the SVD site and they had some good reviews of the norinco
version of the SVD in .308. There are only about 2000 of them in the US and I was wondering if any of the M305 fans over here knew anything about them like are they legal in canada? How do they compare to the M305? same company and round. Does norinco have a FAL copy as well?

I will never understand the reasoning (if any) behind banning one gun that fires 308 semiauto and allowing another semi308 from the same company?
It must be the wood stock that makes the M305 "less evil".

M14's are prohibited too though, one has to remember...

Only the full-auto ones.

SVD's and FAL's are prohibited be they full auto or only semi. They're just too gosh darn evil looking for diddly!

But the point being that we managed to get the norinco clones through... With a little pushing and a lot of luck perhaps we can get the RCMP and CFC to let a SVD copy in. Doubtful, yes, but who knows!

There's no sense too it. Buddy, just keep quiet and buy them up now. Remember, we're the last generation to get these types of guns, so don't slip up, and buy lots of extras and spare parts. Keep them in good shape to pass down through your famaily in case a time of crisis comes. Loose lips sink ships, and we want to do everything in our power to consistently remind the world that this is a semiauto hunting rifle with wood stock. If there's one thing that will get this gun banned, it will be some nut with a tricked out rifle who shoots a few folks. Politicians will look at this site and see all the faux-military m14s in the photo threads, sage stocks, camo, full assault wannabe gear getups with multiple 20 round mags in tac vests, skulls, this kind of stuff and we'll be ####ed. I know that stuff looks cool, but it will most certainly be our undoing. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Which is exactly what was done to the VZ58s in order to get them into Canada. Our guns laws are a monument to sheepism! :slap:

Not excatly. VZ58 receivers (being receivers ONLY) were welded up. These receivers were never part of complete F/A firearms so the welding is looked at as more of a "final step" in the manufacture of a semi-auto only receiver. Had the receivers once been part of a F/A VZ58, welding them up would only make them Converted Autos and thus prohib.

Hows that for a tour in the wacky world of Libby reasioning?:D

The SVD and variants are prohibited by name. Ain't gonna' happen.
Chances are that Norinco won't give it a common name. Doesn't all their stuff get a N*-** type designation?

CANCER; Please get your fact straight before naking a statement.... The VZ-58s were built from parts....
If we had simply converted existing rifles they woul be prohib....
As for the SVD read the regs the rifle is treated as being of the AK "family"
John

The SVD is considered an AK variant and is specifically listed in the OIC as being prohibited. I'd love to have one in my safe, but it isn't going to happen anytime soon. Perhaps if we see a repeal of the current legislation and adoption of a new firearms regime like the NFA's Practical Firearms Control System, we may yet regain the right to own and shoot historic rifles like the SVD & FN-FAL.
