Any Info re: Mossberg 500 c/w Removeable Choke?

I'm considering a new Mossberg 500, specifically the one with removeable choke, fibre optic sight, and long (26" iirc) barrel. Anyone have any experience with it?

I've read most of the posts debating 500 vs 590 vs 870. (Who has time to read them all :p ) Just curious about the choke system on it mainly - that it's durable, worthwhile, etc.

I'm in love with the 590 mariner, but its 24" barrel and cyl bore choke don't really suit the grouse hunting and skeet shooting I want to do with it mainly.

If you want a solid hunting gun then you've found it, the tacticool guns are fun but here in canada generaly aren't that usefull.
That comment will get me some heat for sure.
Just so everyone knows I want a 870 or ithaca 37 with a 18.5 or 20" barrel idealy rifled and with sights, but they are out of my current price range of free to dirt cheap.

Nothing bad to say from me either.
I use mine for grouse and trap, and I haven't had any trouble at all.
20 ga is a bit light for the long shots in trap but it is what I have.
Best round to date 18/25 (and still improving)
You can get fancier shotguns but why?
 
The choke system is perfectly fine on these. I usually put a dab of oil on the threads when storing and no problems to date. They have a tool to cinch them in snug but you can just use your finger and a little torque=stays good.

You wanted a negative point, here it is.....

Get a buddy/punch yourself on the left cheekbone. Now go shoot a five pack of 3" slugs. I'm betting both cheeks now feel the same.:p
 
I have a Maverick 88 which is the cheaper version of the Mossberg 500 and love it. I use it for everything including a little skeet and trap now and again. Its great and for the price, its hard to beat. You can find the Maverick for under $300. Most parts are interchangable with the Mossberg 500 including the accu-choke tubes. Very nice to carry in the field.
 
Only bad thing I can say about the it was the front sling swivel studs were missing and it took six weeks for them (customer service) to reply to my email and another month or so to mail them to me.

I think the gun is excellent for the price and well worth the cash (under $400). I even got it in camo and my 12g package came with second barrel for rifled slugs. No problems with the chokes or the barrels. Barrels are ported. Great value... wish I had one in 20g too.

28" vent-rib barrel with one (modified) Accu-Choke tube. 3" chamber and black synthetic stock.
 
Well thanks for trying all, but there just wasn't enough bad to say about it so I had to go buy it.

I'm now the proud owner of a new Mossberg 535 ATS Waterfoul. It shoots 2 3/4" - 3" - and 3 1/2", has a 28" barrel, comes with 3 chokes (full, mod, and imp. cyl.), fibre optic front sight, etc.

$290 brand new over the counter

Range report to follow. So far I like the weight of it over the 870 (it's lighter so will kick a bit I bet, but it swings really nice and easy), and the action release is behind the trigger guard, which I much prefer to in front as on the 870.

Man new gun days are awesome :)

I bought a 535 with 28" barrel, 3 chokes, and a rifled slug barrel for $359 at SIR. Been pretty happy with it so far (I think they are still on sale)
 
Well, I shot 75 rounds through it last night at Sporting Clays and Skeet. Went about 30% hit, but I'm very sure it's not the gun's fault :p

Seriously, except for a slightly gritty action, which is understandable in a $300 gun and will likely improve with wear, I love this shotty!

I'm glad you like your gun. I Have two 500's. My 20 ga. is new, and I've had my 12 ga. for 25 years. I put an accu-choke barrel on it years ago, very reliable gun, low maintenance, I love it.
