Any interest in good quality doubles

The tactical stuff does seem to take control of the shotgun section every now and then. But I think there might be a few SxS lovers here :)

To my feeble mind, a really good shotgun has to have two barrels, double triggers, and well figured walnut. Some tasteful hand engraving helps. If it's a 16 ga even better!
I get tired of looking for insights about good shotguns on this forum, too many people just interested in blasting stuff and not enough interested in the art of the shotgun and wingshooting. I wish we had our own "non macho" shotgun forum. I don't get the "tactical" thing at all. I have nothing against those who like them, and they are OK for blasting water bottles at a range I suppose, but I much prefer to hunt birds and shoot with a beautiful double gun.

i love all sporting shotguns, but especially sxs's and 0/u's. not really into the tactical appearance , but each to their own.

X2...even tho i bought a grizzly...i bought it more for throwing on my back while i'm after bigger game for "back up". but don't get me wrong, i still like the way a done up pump looks.

X2, Maybe it's time for a Norinco only section. Oh, sorry there allready is it's called the EE. :)

LOL...good one Win64. I like hearing about peoples fine shotguns and have come around in my 25+ years of shooting. I started with a pump and have owned all the actions. They all have a place for sure...in fact, I have a 20 bore Ugartechea side lock on order from Lion Country Supply as we speak!

i agree with longwalker. A proper shotgun has 2 barrels sitting side by side. my cabinet is getting fuller year after year. tactical is not my thing but this site is definately full of useful information.

Out of curiosity, did you simply order that SxS via your local gun shop or were you required to complete additional (US to Canada import) formalities as well.....unless you may have used an establishment like Questar?

You wouldn't happen to have any pic's of the Ugartechea would you?

I have a 14" 870, but am maturing onto a 20ga RBL in the not too distant (though it seems waaaay too far off) future. Both have their place for me. I like blasting around with the pump like a caveman, but when I need to show some culture and civility the 20ga will come out. Jekyll and Hyde in the flesh! :shotgun:

Through good luck more than anything else I've had the chance to at least leave my nose prints on the display cases of all the major English makers if not handle some of their guns, shoot fine sxs and o/u at the H&H and Churchill shooting grounds and visit Eibar to poke around the shops of the Spanish makers and order a custom gun.

There are many of us interested in fine guns but not as much discussion about them. It's not unusual. People might have an interest in fine guns but not much exposure to them and are more inclined to talk about about what they have than what they don't.

you're a lucky man. i just recieved a book from james purdy & sons entitled" purdy, the definitive history" i've always admired the makers of best guns but i seem to drool a little more over purdys.this book ain't cheap by any means but it's well worth the price if you're into this sort of thing.now if i could win the 649, i'd place an order with them ASAP.

Nothing from Purdey's is cheap. When I was there last they had a deck of playing cards that came in an engraved sterling silver for £900, a pair of socks was £150.

Purdey is still the marque to be measured against. I certainly like their guns more than H&H. But with a 6/49 win in my pocket I'd land in London see what Wm. Evans had on the rack that I could bring home immediately. Then take a train Scotland and order a gun here:

I'd shoot the gun from Evans until the McKay Brown arrived.

Same here. I have a poor-man's custom SxS from some unknown maker in the Brescia valley - probably mostly Sabatti components. That gun, my GSP buddy - Rook, and a few grouse and woodcock flushes amongst the briars and alders spells the perfect day for me.

I'd love to add another, perhaps more classy, SxS or O/U, but as it stands I already have BRNO ZH201 and a Beretta A300 - both in 2 3/4. I can't get rid of these - too much family history. And I must equip myself with a 3" chamber waterfowl gun before even thinking of adding another upland wand.

Candid statement.

I come from a family environment where Upland and Waterfowl hunting revolved ONLY around English (and just a couple Spanish) sxs makes......all else, mostly, were kind of frowned upon

Having said this, I'm afraid that mere talk about such over on-line forums may only result in conveying the impression of a full-time snob :)......one only needs to look at the ones displayed in various US retails sites today to understand why.

P.S. While I do not own any slide action shotgun.....it may not be out of place to say that if we were all offered an option to own just one shotgun for everything including protection - the obvious choice without much dispute will be a pump :D
