Howdy,

I got a call from my father the other day. He told me my mom's brother was getting rid of his guns; he gave Dad is old Enfield sporter and a 20 gauge. He told Dad to had over my grandfather's rifle to me. Gramp loved his Remington 742; I think it was a gift from Nan to him. That I know of, he only ever shot one deer with it and it sat on the wall for decades before ending up in my father's gun cabinet (uncle had no extra storage for it). The scope is done last time I looked at it (foggy and spotty), but I have a sweet little Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32mm in gloss that is sitting on my 10/22 that would look perfect on it.

I am a lefty, so I have problems with ejection sometimes on right handed guns. Has any other lefty tried one out? If so, will they clear my face (used to seeing brass fly by from AR and pistols), or am I going to get love taps from the brass each time I fire it? Plan to go back home to NB (been in Ontario 17 years and NB is still home) to chase Bambi with it if all works out well. If not, I will thump 'em with a 375 H&H Ruger #1 :d.

I'm a lefty and had one once. Chambered in 7mm Remington Express(.280 Remington). Took a doe mule deer with it once. Wasn't great wasn't bad but never had an issue with cases coming past my face. I found the only time you really notice it is off the bench. Otherwise when you are hunting and actually shooting at an animal you never notice. Maybe I'm just oblivious to it after years of shooting other RH semi rifles and shotguns but I don't consider it a problem at all.

I am the same way; If I concentrate on it, I can see the brass fly by, but it does not bother me. I am happy to hear that it will not smack me in the face.

It is a nostalgia thing more than anything. I remember the only deer he ever shot with it hanging in the garage out back of the house in town; big 10 or 12 pointer. Nan will get a kick to hear that it is being used again. Just need to take it out this summer and sight it in and make sure it hits the target.

As a lefty, I have shot 742,7400, 750 and Bar. Never an issue with brass in the face. The casings are thrown well clear. Actually an advantage shooting a right handed gun as a lefty. Easy to rotate the receiver over slightly giving you a clear view of the chamber to prove it is safe etc. You should have no issues.

Thanks for the help guys. Does anyone happen to have a digital manual for it, or know where to get one? Will tear it down and clean it when I am home to make sure she functions as best she can.

the main thing is to use proper eye relief and not to climb on the stock- if anyting fit a slipon on recoil pad or wear a thick jacket -to increase the lop so your face isn't anywhere near the ejection port

you can probably download the 742 manual from Remington- don't be too ambitious about tearing it down- like most Remington product it was designed by monkeys and may be impossible to put back together- and get at least 2 or 3 of those z brushes for the chamber I just cked and the manual is on the Remington webside uder a pdf

Thanks for the idea of the Remington site. If you search by Google, the website shows nothing, but going directly to the site and searching worked.

There is no more brush with it. Has anyone tried a ratchet type garand chamber brush? Only other chamber brushes I saw had to have the gun tore down.

I just run a snake thorough it or reverse a cleaning rod to pull from the breach out the muzzle.

Not a fan of cleaning from the muzzle, even with a brass Bor guide. Would rather dismantle it since the barrel will come off.

Talked to my grandmother the other day and she told me the rifle has not had more than 2 boxes of ammo through it since she bought it for him at Canadian tire quite some time ago (before I was born).

Seems like a lot of work. Maybe if you don't shoot it very much. You also run the risk of changing the POI every time you dissasemble/reassemble

Hi Corey, I am also a LH shooter and hunted with a 742 for over 10 years. No problem with ejected brass ever. I always used a pull through to clean the barrel - Ottis is the name stainless cable with a plastic coating. I still have it, and take it on hunting trips.
Take Care

Remington uses a stepped cleaning brush to clean the chamber- I've never taken the barrel off mine - never needed to as it's SUPPOSED to be self cleaning- or so the manual says
