I know they’ve been out of production for almost 40 yrs but are there any fans around? I just scored a 6” Security barrel in the hopes that I can find a Service Six and convert it to a 4.2” restricted.

Something about fixed sight double actions just speaks to me but good luck finding a non prohib, especially in .357.

I have a Security Six in .357 with a 4" barrel. I carried a S&W .38 spl with a 4" barrel for several years but I am a big Ruger fan. I like the Ruger's beefy frame and style. It fits my hand just right.

I have a pair of them. Very good revolvers and I prefer them to the GP100, which is clunkier.

The DA is not as good as a Smith, but with a trigger job, the SA can be excellent.

For the price, they are very good revolvers.

I like the look of them. Never handled one but I have a Redhawk I like very much so if I ever decide I have enough money and enough time to shoot it that I can add another restricted, a seller of a Security or Service Six would have a good chance with me.

If you are rebarreling it anyway then it doesn't matter if it is prohib. Send it to a gunsmith with the 6" barrel and have it re-registered as a restricted when finished. You do need an understanding seller of the prohib in the first place, though.

Yeah I agree about the trigger. It's rough and creepy in double action mode. It can be lightened and smoothed out quite easily though. I also agree it's a much better pistol than the GP100

Yes. What I meant was that it’s hard to find fixed sight double actions in .357 over 4” in general.

Definitely need an understanding seller, although I believe Murray Charlton will register it to his business if you go through him for the work then re-register it to you once it’s restricted.

I was going to do this in the past with a S&W Model 13 but the only barrel I could find was too expensive for my liking. You’d think there would be a lot of spare 5 and 6” .38 barrels out there from PPC builds but I never got a single reply to a WTB in the EE.

Now the search begins for a Police Service Six. Barrel is blue but I won’t be too picky at this point. I’ve seen a few Security Sixes pop up in the EE but no fixed sight Service Sixes. Hell, I’d likely jump on a Speed Six even though I’d prefer the square butt.

Show us what you’ve got. Especially if it’s been customized. Love looking at these things.

I have a great affection for standard police service revolvers. I also have a 12(6) RPAL. A year ago I decided that I needed to represent a Ruger in my collection of 4", fixed sight .38 specials. I am open to stainless or blued. I have opened the description a little to tolerate .357, since they are theoretically much more common. But I'm still looking. Security Sixes make regular appearances on the EE, and a couple of 2-3" Speed Sixes have come and gone, but I haven't been able to spot a 4" gun in this country anywhere.

I think Dante had one or two used Ruger service sixes not that long ago.

Woops looks like they are gone .

I have a blued 4" Ruger in Service Six format (square butt and fixed sights) but marked Security Six, not sure the back story but it's a nice gun and a good shooter. I also have a 2.75" stainless Speed Six that's a great shooter with jacketed .357's but doesn't group well with lead in either ..357 or .38 - I'm still playing with it. It's a chunk for a sorta-snubbie, but I think I'll hang onto it and it shall become my "old man gun"...

Sounds like a an early one. Weren’t both adjustable and fixed sight models called Security Six initially? 150 series?

Show us some pics. Sounds like a nice pair.

My first centerfire handgun was a 6" stainless Security-Six and I really liked it a lot. Unfortunately it was stolen when my apartment in Toronto was burgled in the late '70's. I'm not that much of a revolver enthusiast any more, but I sure wish I still had that gun.

I have a snuby like that in s.s.,also 2.75 or whatever, I put a wolf spring in it years ago, made a big difference, these guns are all sprung so there is no chance of a light strike when used by L.E. , I shoot my 4 `s-w 19 more as that has had a super trigger job on it, but that ruger will last for ever,

I have three and they are reliable and good shooters. IMO it was a mistake to drop them for the GP100.

I had a Stainless Security Six 357 with a 6 inch barrel over 20 years ago. It was accurate, I just never really took to it.
My favorite Double action revolvers have been Smiths.

I have owned at least 5 Security sixes from 2.75" blued to 6" stainless, but most were 4" guns. All were .357's, never owned a .38 model. I tried numerous times to buy a 2.75 Speed Six but never panned out.

My first restricted gun was a pre 151 serial numbered 4" blued model with original frame shape and a Pachmayr grip insert - remember those? This was in 1975 and I bought it used in exc. condition from a CN police officer for $90!

Double action is better on S&W's BUT the Ruger can be made as good if tuned by an expert. I do not currently own one but I do have a 4" GP100 which is a joy to shoot with full house magnums, something I could not say for the lighter Security Six, but they are great guns.

I carried one in with a four inch barrel in a shoulder holster on a rough terrain job in South America. At the end of a few months, there wasn't any finish left on the pistol but even with a minimum of maintenance it functioned flawlessly. Until you've experienced a rain forest squall it's hard to envision. The mud in those regions is more like slimy glue and gets into every nook and cranny. My biggest mistake was using a leather holster. The holster succumbed to the elements after a month but luckily one of the early nylon types became available.

That pistol wasn't pretty by any means. It was a utilitarian piece all the way. It stood up much better than the Brazilian made Taurus clones, which IMHO are fine firearms. The Taurus offerings rusted but still functioned. The Taurus pistols issued for service and available there were all matte finished with a reddish brown finish. The Ruger S6 ran smoothly, didn't rust but lost all of its finish. It was great for small game and perfectly adequate for the job. Its grips also fit my smaller hands in a more ergonomically pleasing manner.
