Any love for the 17 WSM?

I know Savage had some problems with the Bmag when it first came out... but I think they have all the bugs worked out now. I love my 17 wsm... its a tack driver and way cheaper to shoot than my 22-250. I'd recommend it to anyone thinking about getting one! It's a keeper!

Love the 17wsm. I am kinda a 17 guy though. I have kept my ammo but sold the BmAG. What a crappy design. I had a pencil barrel, it shot under 1” with both 20,25gr offerings at the time. I can’t stand the bolt. Cheapest feeling rifle I ever held in my hands, which is usually a compliment if it’s accurate. I just couldn’t get over it.

There is a bit of a cost disadvantage, but some days it’s worth 10-20.00 of good gopher hunting to not worry about the brass at all.

I will either build a falling block custom or get a low wall at some point. The hornet is sweet , picked one up when looking for a m77 in 17wsm. Found the same rifle in a hornet and added it to the collection.

Big fan myself. I have a heavy barreled bmag in a Boyd's stock. Not a fan of the rifle design but love the round. Two new A17 semi auto models just announced at shot show. A light barreled stainless sporter and a heavy barreled version with thumbhole stock. Both with laminate stocks.

Myself, I would love to see Henry and CZ come out with rifles in this caliber

i have the heavy barrelled , thumb hole Savage
I like mine. I wish accuracy was a little better. I get about 1.5"-2" at 100 yds. I know some are getting better.
Maybe it's just me
American Eagle 20 and 25 grn hit same place and same accuracy

My neighbor let me borrow his Bmag for as long as I wanted. Did not like the rifle at all or the cartridge. Mostly all bark and not much for bite or accuracy.
I couldn't see myself using one over a .223.

I was looking at those A17 semi's. Told my buddy he should get one for coyotes. He doesn't like the noise from his centrefires with his hearing aids in but needs them in so he can hear the other guys on the radios running the dogs. Would give him a bit more pop than HMR he's using.

I had no idea that was being added. That’s very exciting for me. I don’t like picking up brass on a semi. This also fits the bill. Maybe the falling block needs to be a 218 bee instead.

I love my BMag 17 WSM. I don't reload and have no desire to do so. Gophers, pigeons and crows hate the 17 WSM. Skunks and other vermin detest the round. To each their own. Too many on this and other forums are very critical of the 17 WSM, and in MOST cases the poster has never even owned or shot a 17 WSM. It is not a target round!! It is designed to take out critters at a longer distance than a .22, .22MAG, and a .17HMR. My BMAG does that very well. Would I buy again? In a heartbeat. Do I wish for another manufacturer for the rifle? Yes, I would love a CZ in 17 WSM!! JMHO!

Well, take this as from a guy whose never gonna buy one, I figure I can get the performance for cheaper reloading, and I end up with a gun that isn't ugly (Savage) or overpriced for the product (Win 1885).

All told, my opinion of the .17 WSM as a rimfire round, is that it is a solution, desperately seeking a problem to answer.

My opinion , is that it will go the way of the 5mm Remington Magnum, except without as many options to convert the rifles to once ammo can no longer be got.

What's not to love? I bought one of the original BMAGS with the light barrel and plastic stock. I added a Boyds laminate to it. I liked the performance of the cartridge but the rifle left something to be desired. I sold off the original, kept the Boyds stock and bought a heavy barrel BMAG as a replacement.
The HB will keep five under and inch at a hundred, just. I find the heavier barrel makes it a lot nicer to shoot off hand. I have rolled groundhogs and the occasional coyote out to 200 with it.
I bought a good supply of ammo from Lebaron when it was open for around $14 a box, picked up some more from a fellow on the exchange who had sold his rifle and then bought a case at a local gun show for not much more.
I have a couple of .22 Hornets, a custom #3 and a #1B as well as a .220 Swift plus several .22's and .22 Magnum. I enjoy the .17WSM for what it is a handy, well performing cartridge in a reasonably accurate firearm.

I have one I got on trade for some work I did in my shop. Its a bmag heavy barrel. The shing shoots great, but I cant for the life of me get the safety moving freely. I have tried everything. Savage hasn’t got back to me yet. I would like to use it for turkey this year instead of the shotgun. I would think I can get it shooting even better if I bed it... Would like to figure that damn safety out though....

It is not for everyone but it fits the needs of the non-reloader.
Local information at a LGS showed some demand for the 25 grain loads by dairy farmers looking to control coyotes.
One customer had taken the time to determine the 25 grain bullet was superior to the 20 grain variety.
Sighted in for 100 yards he claimed deadly accuracy to the fence at 125 yards.
Our 100 metre rimfire event was left open to the 17 HMR. While they were consistently bested by the 22 long rifles, the two were separated when a 17 HMR won the annual championship.
That said the 17 WSM has yet to make an appearance at any match.
