Just curious, but I'm wondering about anybody on Vancouver Island if you've had much luck this season??? Bear, Deer, Elk?
I've seen more elk that I can't drop than anything else:kickInTheNuts:. I have only seen the one buck, but it alas got away...

Stories, photos, areas????

happy hunting

Been too busy working 6 days a week. I drive around with the Mrs and newborn Baby on my only day off but so far no meat in the pot. Next time I apply for a job I'm asking the boss if hes a hunter so he understands time off a little better.:D

Good luck.

Got this one mid November towards port renfrew, not my biggest, but tasty!!
Day started out pretty rough, but ended up ok. Spilled my hot coffee on my sac going through a cross ditch before first light (was a little deeper than i thought!!), got to my fav spot only to find a tarp town had sprung up overnight, campers and quads everywhere. Out to another area, road is washed out and more quads. Finally got to another spot about 8am and realized i forgot my binos, so i cranked up the scope to check the slash. Didn't see anything so my buddy suggested another spot where we saw a couple does the week before. Just got back into the timber when the two point walked out about 20yrds in front of the truck. Jumped out, tried loading my smoke in the rifle, (buddy jumps out and drops his bullets in the mud!!)finally chamber a round, aim..WTF!! All i could see was a big brown blur. Forgot to turn the scope back down from the slash.
Anyway, basically pointed at the chest and fired. He went down, and buddy and i started laughing our asses off, glad no-one had a camera on us (turns out we didn't have one ourselves!!)
Anyway, heres the pic

All spikes! No wonder there is no deer left on the island. You guys keep shooting the young ones. I haven't seen a full rack in a few years. We go hunting in Clearwater, BC now because there is nothing left on the island.

The deer numbers are way down compared to years back because the dumb b_ _ _ _ _ _s transplanted timber wolves to an island that historically had none! A few guys shooting spikes isn't your main problem. When wolves were first planted on the island back in the 50's the main food source for them was the deer. They said transplanting the wolves would help the deer herd by eliminating the sick and injured( Farley Mowat Crap!). There was no other readily available food source and with a large blacktail population the wolves flourished.Other food sources such as small game native to the island came in the form of grouse, marmots , squirrels and songbirds. This is not enought to sustain a growing wolf population. There were also no Elk native to the island, they too are a transplant. There were no rabbits as there is now, cottonatil rabbits in the southern part of the island are a transplant as well. As are the quail and a few other critters like skunk and raccoon that now inhabit the island. The other problem in my opinion is the wanton slaughter of deer by the natives. I have watched countless natives walk into Johnson's hardware in Nanaimo, when it was still there, buying military surplus ball ammo in 223 to go "hunt" deer as they used to say in the summer months of June and July.( I am metis and do not condone the kind of activities brought on by many members of the native communities). All these things combined are whats bringing about the destruction of our herds. It is the same here in Ontario as well nowadays. Our deer herds are dropping dramatically the past few years as the coyote/wolf population soars out of control, the natives shoot wildlife year round and sell it openly in their convenience stores on the reserve here(Moose meat $8/pound as the signs in the store say). Unless we get our politicians and courts to actually enforce the laws and treaty agreements THEY signed and stand up to the folks who have taken our fur industry to it's death bed causing a severe rise in predator numbers we will watch our wildlife vanish before us and our way of life along with it.:(

There's some deer left on the Island, my sister sent me a picture of 8 bucks and one doe on her lawn. She lives in Nan. not to far from the ferry. There is just not many outside city limits.

I've spent the last three years hunting around the Nanaimo and have been skunked, I saw a lot of elk, more then I ever expected. So this year we hiked for 3 hours to the top of a mountain in Sayward in the pouring rain, stayed overnight, and had bare minimum, what ever we could fit in our packs. The rain didn't let up. Thankfully we didn't see any deer, I probably would still be up there fighting to get it down.
All that said, my hunting partner and I finally got a 2pt out past horne lake. Success, our first deer.
Now its coming up to spring, and I want a bear! I'll be going out towards tofino come season opening.
Happy hunting
