Any Magneto Speed Gurus Here?

Mine has been a life saver but it seems to have developed a quirk - it isn't working on my 1876 lever gun repro. I have to be super careful with smokeless loads in the gun because of the weak action... and for some reason, the chronograph no longer works and I suspect the tubular magazine of the gun may play into the problem... yet it has worked in the past. It will either not register the shot or give me 'Error Code 2'. In the instructions that comes up as having to do with twisting signal cables... so I took care of that but the problem persists.

You guys have any ideas?

Happy New Year to all, BTW!

I've just started looking into buying a magnetospeed sporter but this is what it lists on their website. Hope it helps. The error 2 message you are seeing is actually a spacing and sensitivity error. The instructions that you received have been updated and are available on our website. Here is the link: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0...e7-9603-6463da53598f.pdf?11897484851174917067. Err2 Adjust sensitivity and ensure proper spacing.

If I mount mine under the mag of a lever gun it won't read so I mount it on top of the barrel to get the sensor closer to the bore. It's a bit of a nuisance to sight past it but I only fire enough shots to find out how fast the load is so it's no big deal.

How far is the bullet over the sensor plane in your setup? Can you get as close as you're supposed to (1/4" for most bullets, 1/8" for small/hard to detect bullets)?

This is what I do as well.

Yes, it will work with lead bullets just fine. I use it on my big rolling block single shot and it works without a hiccup!

As has been mentioned, the tube magazine is placing the sensor far below the muzzle than design permits. Upside down on the top and do without sighting a few shots: Personally I'd figure a way to make it stay in place on the side of the barrel if I had one... only used one and I liked it much better than my conventional chrono on account of it being so quick to setup.

This is prob good advice. You can go into the menu and change the sensitivity which could help it pick up bullets that are passing by a little too far from the bayonet.

There's an aftermarket accessory that won't ship to Canada that allows the Magneto speed to mount to a weaver rail on the stock instead of the barrel so that POI isn't affected. I made my own with hefty scope rings and some 1" aluminum tubing. You might be able to rig up something similar. Use a cleaning rod or something similar to check the distance between the bore and the bayonet. Not too far, but not shot off, juuuussst right lol

Another chronograph eaten by a bullet won't be the last. Fabricating a mount other than the barrel might be useful: however I don't remember the results when my friend and I were doing the POI experiment with his... I think the 100y difference was not substantial as to be worth remembering: yes the POI did change, but for determining velocity a group would be shot anyway so that change was consistent enough for the group for probably all but BR shooters. I'd have to redo the test multiple times again before engraving a report in stone.

I'd just like to add that I've seen some sizeable differences in poi shift using the magnetospeed on various rifles. My Rem 700P with it's 26" varmint profile bbl prints IIRC around 6-8" high while my Rem 760 .30-06 with it's 22" sporter bbl was off the paper at 100 yds. It was over 2 feet high. This of course is no exhaustive test, just some observations. Another observation was during load development with the 700P I noticed groups were larger with the MS in place but they were relative to groups shot with no MS. By that I mean the nodes were still visible, each charge weight showing the same relative change in group size just with a larger group. And again, far from exhaustive and undoubtedly not repeatable across the board. Just some observations.

I run a 26” M24 that had margin POI shift at 100 yards. Sub half inch, and a 26” Proof Comp Contour with no measurable shift at 100 yards. Something is seriously wrong if you are getting multiple inches of shift at 100.
I never shoot for groups with it attached.
I will be fabbing or acquiring an Arca mount to isolate it off he barrel at some point.

Well, what is wrong if everything is working fine? These are lighter barrels than yours. Hell even my Mosin has a large POI shift with the bayonet attached. They were factory sighted with the bayonet attached and it makes a big difference.
