Basically I was wondering if anyone does loads like 76 grains of powder. I know you would need a powder trickler to measure the loads but was wondering if anyone has done it and if it improved acuracy. Just a thought I was pondering.

I don't get this post at all...i use 66grs. of Black in my 45/70, and 83grs. of 2fg in my 45/100 and 103grs of 1 1/2fg Swiss in my 50/90...I'm sure i could use the "Magic" 76 grs. in the larger ones...and use some felt wads to take up space and leave no empty space, but what have I to gain??

I have the feeling that Salt was just asking if anyone uses charges other than those recommended as maximum...even numbers you know! If he is using a modern M/L he may also be using pellets. Just a thought. I can advise that, as Ben says, some of my best (most accurate) loads are ones I have worked up with 2-5 grain increments until finding the critical number. Dave.

Hey guys sorry for the confusing post. I'm talking about useing it in a 50 cal TC renagade or maybe a hawken bp. I'm using pyderox powder and i'm not getting teriffic results from cronicals with 70, 80, 90,or 100 grain loads. I was just wondering if it would be worth my time to try it.

those sound like fairly hot loads for 50 cal mini or maxi balls. Not unsafe but rather they could be distorting the skirt if you are shooting mini balls. As mentioned above, with black powder at least, you probably have to go to 5 gr increments to make any significant difference in accuracy or velocity.
Two things come to my mind; try dropping down to 50 grains are start working up from there, preferrably at 50 yards at a square black bullseye so that you have a sharp definition of where the bullseye is. Try shooting a 6 O clock hold and don't worry where they hit as long as they are on the paper. The point being to get a sharp sight picture and see what groups you get with each load.
Second suggestion would be to use a square post forward and a square notch with a flat top at the back and line the top of the front sight with the top of the rear sight; again to get a sharp repeatable sight picture.
I am also assuming that you do not have a round ball barrel with a slow twist; try shooting patched roundball and see how it groups; around 50 grains of 3F powder
On the mini balls the lube should be fairly soft like baby poo; make some up using 50% lard and 50% bees wax and see if that helps. Finally if you are casting your own slugs, the alloy is important and would suggest something close to pure lead.

cheers mooncoon

I shoot 85gr of Triple Seven in my 50 cal Renegade with both home cast bullets w/ bore butter for lube, or .495 home cast patched round ball...accuracy is excellent with both.....all bullets I cast are pure lead BTW.....

Did load Maxi hunter, and the real bullet from a 45 and a 54, I quit before I got anywhere near max load, it was a killer on both ends with these moster slugs :D Used 3f in the 45 , and 2f in the 54. Metal concave recoil assist plate.
