Hi guys

- I am new to the precision riffle game and i really like it , i just buy a Ruger precision in .308 and of course is not cheap to shoot all day! does a 7.62 x39 bolt precision make any sense? cheap ammo plank all day to be a better shooter?

For now i find zero option in 7.62x39 .

thank you

The x39 has A couple of disadvantages compared to typical precision cartridges. Velocity is its biggest downfall, limiting it to maybe 350 yards with a premium bullet. Secondly, available components including good bullets are difficult to find because of its odd diameter.

It was meant as a short to medium range infantry round, and that's all it's really good for. The accuracy is decent but a good barrel would be hard to find and probably wouldn't be worth sourcing, considering the cartridge's deficiencies.

I'm building a precision heavy sporter in 7.62x39 on an old Tikka 595 sporter(223rem), just to prove to myself it will make a fine 100-300metre rig :)
Bullets are not hard to find, tradex and Hirsch Precision have quality bullets in stock, the Lapua 123 I've shot in my CZ with great success.
Here my build:
Tikka 595 action (bolt face opened up for PPC case)
Tikka 595 22-250 magazine (feeds 7.62x39 well)
Benchmark #5 SS #5 1/10twist 308 bore barrel(will be shooting 308 dia. Bullets)
Tikka 585 single stage target trigger
Factory Tikka sporter stock
When I get it all together, I'll post report.

From the sound of your build, I'm sure it'll shoot great, within the distance parameters of the 7.62x39. But since you're using .308 dia bullets anyways, it isn't going to be any cheaper than shooting .308 straight up but with way less potential, as far as range is concerned. I believe the OP was hoping for long range precision but at 7.62x39 surplus costs...

Kind of like putting a VW engine in a Corvette.....

CZ makes a bolt gun that shoots the ammo about as accurately as possible. Nice little rifle and you won't lose much when you go to sell it. CZ 527

I have a savage scout in 7.62x39. It is an extremely fun plinker. I typicly shoot it out to 240yards and it sure puts a smile on my face.

Its not super loud, very cheap to shoot, and has a decent little kick to it. Its funny how little kick there is from an SKS but a bolt gun with same caliber is a tad louder and more violent. I can shoot about a 3" group at a 100 yards with it. I use the iron sights on it, so I can't tell you if its the rifle or me shooting like that.

Any hoo, you can probably find the savage for about 6-700$.

A .308" rather than .310" precision barrel, chambered in 7.62X39, is a nifty idea, that has the advantage of utilizing commonly available .308 match bullets. The highly successful PPC cartridges have a direct lineage to the 7.62X39, so its reasonable to have an expectation of fine accuracy from a .308X39. I'd begin with match bullets in the 150-155 gr range. The small powder charge, and moderate bullet weight would result in an accurate, pleasant shooting outfit. Mexican match could be made from surplus ammo to keep practice costs down; just resize to .308, and reweigh the powder charge, to uniform the charge weight, and reduced to allow for the heavier bullet.

I'm building this gun to have a cheap 100/200 yard light target rifle that I can take hunting for deer. Also I want to shoot a little cheaper than my 308win, half the powder, and just have fun !
Man some of you guys are jumpy on the cartridge, don't know anyone who built a presicion rig in this calibre, should be a fun build, and funnrt to shoot. No surplus is going threw this gun, so relax :)
This build is actually pretty reasonable $500 barrel/reamer, donor gun $500, Tikka 22-250 mag $70, Tikka target trigger is a left over from my 308win(free)
Good friend made me a target bolt handle (free)
Traded work for threading and chambering from a friend( cost to me $0)
So only $1070 total to experiment with Russian cartridge, to each his own!!!

the savage 7.62x39 rifles had a .308 bore instead of the .311 used when shooting surplus. shooting surplus out of the savage does not get good groups in my experience.

My bushmaster ACR with custom .311 barrel shoots Canada ammo Dominion bulk hollowpoints around 1moa

I guess I would align with the folks suggesting 30BR. If you are not going to use surplus in your built as you stated ... the 30BR really offers a lot advantages..
