American shooting forums have this almost religious prohibition of using steel case ammo in M14 type rifles. Is there any reason not too?

Really? I have put a couple hundred MFS through mine so far. Other than the usual grumblings about steel cased ammo in any rifle; this is the first I have heard of this.

Tagged for interest.

Perhaps they are having issues with the laquer coated steel case? The copper washed stuff is also available, and poses no problems I am aware of.

Crates of norc copper wash have been through my '14, only problem is getting the crates at the price I used to :(

Seriously the only times I can remember any problems with the ammo was with an occasional empty getting jammed under the cheap scope mount I had on for a while.

Same experience as Klaus. The previous owner of my Norc M14S put at least a case of Norc steel case ammo through it before I put almost a case through it. No problems yet.

This could be related to the theory that steel case ammo is harder on the chromium plating in the military barrels causing undesireable chamber wear.
I have also shot crap loads and crap loads of steel case ammo, thousands were norinco fmj copper wash and several hundred MFS.
This (all chinese) rifle is my beater and has seen close to 10,000 rounds over the past 4 years. Still printing the same reliable groups and still chambering and extracting fime. :)

I suspect that the American legend to not shoot steel in an m14 is because many of the American M14s have non-crome lined barrels.

I have put a couple crates of steel through my norc, and have at least one more to go before the storage room is cleaned out.:50cal:

one would think that military rounds, would go in a military rifle...but i didnt see too many stell cased ammo for the 7.62 NATO in a web search

for those interested, a site that shows them all :

http://www.conjay.com/Ammunition%20for%20Armor%20Testing%20NATO%207.62mm%20x%2051.htm

also lists other calibers...

during my search , i found something really nasty... its called the S.L.A.P.

http://guns.wikia.com/wiki/SLAP_(Saboted_Light_Armor_Penetrator)

it is available as 7.62 round... but i think that it can't be fired accurately from a rifle...(not that it matters, as it would be prohibited)

:agree:
If you clean your rifle I do not think you should have any issues.
Laquer coated steels case contain zink and that might affect your barrel but it will take a while. Copper wash is softer on your barrel and does not leave laquer residue.
