A few ranges here in ON, including my own, have one day in the early fall where the public can come and sight in their hunting rifles. I'm asking on behalf of a fellow hunter in the Edmonton area whether the same might be found there? Last year he used an indoor range somewhere there but too short range to be ideal for his 30-06 sight in.

Any info/options suggested I'll pass along.

Thanks

Hi WB,

None that I have heard of...but what a great idea! :)

You know who DOESN'T have one is Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association.

It's a no guest shooting/no public shooting under any circumstances kind of range.

His best bet is to make friends with someone who's a member at Spruce Grove, since they allow 2 guest shooters per member per day for a $10 drop in fee each.

I think a guest "sight in" day would be great, with RO's around to make sure none of the public visitors violated range rules, but I haven't heard of anything like that in these parts.

For the record, I'm a member of both SPFGA and SGGC.

CHAS allows guests as well, unless the rules have changed. Sadly at this time of year, every "once a year" shooter is out looking for minute of moose so it gets a little crowded. Not a bad idea though. - dan

And sketchy. The vast majority of bad/dangerous gun handling I have seen occurred in the fall when the 10 rounds per year club all come in to check the zero on their hunting rifle. I try to avoid the weekends completely at this time of year.

Buy a membership..

Or find some crown land, since he is looking to avoid joining a club.

x 2 on that one. I know we used to have one of those weekends, but ya, it is scarey enough with guests of members not being safe or following the simplest of range rules, even with an RO.

Nope, the best is join a club and shoot all year. Out club is $75 - single membership and $100 for family. Insurance is included.

Thankfully my local club does not allow one day passes or drop in shooters.
Non members are the least likely to know the rules and safety regulations, as well as proper range etiquette.

I agree there should be some sort of regulations. Our range had a outfitter buy a membership, and bring all his hunters to sight in and they act like they own the place. Others have draged several of the shooting benches down to the 100yrd mark to hold more targets.

I know of one gun club that allowed alcohol on the property until recently...talk about lax rules...
