Is there any practical difference between a $140 Warne Tactical 1-Piece Picatinny Rail Base and a $60 EGW Aluminum base. Yes I know in theory the steel base is less prone to flexing and thermal expansion, but are these factors translating to a noticeable difference other then in the wallet. In prospective this is not going on a real high end setup, just a 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD, with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 AO, and Vortex Tactical rings.

I have 5 egw rails 3 are steel 2 are alum. One of the alum. ones is mounted on my Savage 50cal. muzzle loader and I have no prob with it.

rails are only bad when it enters your nose. for your rifle, never had any truble with EGW and good ol locktight.

Steel is heavier and stronger than aluminium but they are both held down by small steel screws , so imo they are only as strong as the small screws holding them down .
Both are fine from my experience.

Sure hope there's no real difference since I just ordered one for my SPS Tac as well! I'm reading lots of "yes, you 'll be just fine with an aluminum EGW but you may have to bed it due to out-of-spec receivers".

People have been using tiny Weaver aluminum bases for decades and they do hold their POI.
Most if not all benchrest rifles use aluminum bases and rings.
If I buy steel bases and rings it's for extra weight. No zombie apocalypse required. ;)
