I have been thinking about getting a 10mm for fun on the range, and I figure the lower the recoil, the better. In fact, there is really no limiting factor on what I would be willing to do to lower the recoil on the full-power cartridges.

Is there a model with extra barrel weight, recoil compensators or special guide rods, a heavy slide, a 6" barrel (maybe), and extra crap hanging off it? Grip size should be like a 1911, but the rest of it can be huge!

Well, the G20 doesn't really have a 1911 grip size. . .
however, based on the design of the Glocks (low bore axis,
grip angle) I found the G20 to have a bit less felt recoil than
the S&W 1911 I tried. (same caliber of course)
I don't own either but took both for a test drive a few months back.

You could run an ad for an AMT longslide in 10mm (they are out of production). They're a 1911 with a 7" slide and they're pretty tame to shoot.

Is S&W making 1911's in 10mm? Or was this something that had a different upper on the S&W frame?

One option would be something from Tanfoglio.

I know they make a Witness Hunter model with a 6" barrel.

You could talk to Freedom Ventures to see what he has access too, my guess ist that he can find you EXACTLY what ur looking for...

I know the upper end Tanfoglio's are mighty expensive but from what I read they are worth the extra money.

This is the info off of the EAA website.(EAA is Tanfoglio built specifically for U.S.A market).

Tanfoglio designed the Witness "Hunter" model after requests poured in for a true six inch barrel semi-auto pistol. The "Hunter" model is also built in the Tanfoglio custom shop, and has many of the outstanding features found in the Elite series pistols. These features include a premium 6" cone lock barrel, drilled and tapped frame for optics platform, single action trigger, checkered front and back strap, extended safety, and adjustable rear sight. The Witness "Hunter" is available in .45 ACP and .10mm. It makes a great choice for anyone who is interested in pistol hunting for small and medium sized game. Many states that do allow hunting with a pistol require a minimum barrel length of 5.5"-6". The "Hunter" is one of the few auto pistols in production that meets this requirement. Target shooters love the long sight plane system, which makes the "Hunter" model another great choice for someone who is looking for an accurate semi auto pistol with out all of the features found on race guns.

My wife shoots my second Colt Delta Elite, ( blue) and complains after 50 rounds. Not any more !
I milled 2 holes , one on each side, (3 mm each) through the slide right into the barrel (from the top)
at a slight angle, and right behind the barrel bushing.
After de-burring it actually looked quite good ,and more gentle recoil too.
Nothing new of course, and it still workes fine after 450 rounds of hardball
and 200 rounds of hard cast bullets (180 gr) which left some deposit all right
but did not fail.
My stainless one has now over 4000 rounds through, and only the barrel bushing cracked, and my frontsight flew off.
I am not modifying mine though.

Can you purchase Dan Wesson pistols in Canada? If so, my DW Patriot 10mm is a dandy. I started shooting 10mms using my Glock 21 with a 10mm Bar-Sto barrel, that worked for me until I bought the DW. Regards, Richard:D

The AMT longslide really does tame the 10mm, doesn't it Bill? :)

It sure does! It shoots like a 9mm, or maybe even softer.:)
