Looking forward to some opening day stories... Here is mine...
I did not have time to scout, so went in blind hoping for the best, I was hunting a conservation area in a marshy area. I am walking down the pathway and boom the thunderous gobble, so i walked into the forest 5 feet to a female turkey being scared out of the roost, so i sat down and chose my spot! I thought Id be out of luck scaring them away but as it got lighter I saw something in the tree ahead of me, A massive gobbler! Huge beard. I waited an hour for him to come down, he was gobbling in the tree, hoping he would fly down towards me, unfortunately he flew over my decoys and further away from me than i hoped. I spent some time calling hoping he would come back. His gobbles got further and further away so i eventually got up and moved closer, and finally i was back in range when BOOM.... Someone else shoots my turkey... dammit.. Saw three turkeys fly away over me, my day was over...
Was out @ 5am, around 7 am after a series of calls a nice big tom walked within 8 yards of my 3 1/2 " Beretta. Boom dead 3 1/2" federal #4. 20 lbs 14 oz 7/8" and 1" spurs and a 8 1/8 " beard.
Got 2 more days off to hunt and bought another tag back at it in the am. 3 more adults around that I have seen and probabily 6 jakes.....
Andy
I shot over top of a jake with a 3" beard. Misjudged the yardage. Very exciting first hunt tho. Hopefully noone shoots hom by the weekend!
i can top that story.... i shot over a pair. the same two jakes were wandering around later in the afternoon so at least i know i didnt nick one or the other
back at it tomorow afternoon then friday and saturday..
Weird weather has the birds all screwed up, or maybe just me. Had two big strutters at 300 yards on a dead run, a real hen cut them off.
Going out for a quick hunt tomorrow morning. Got two gobblers roosted on an adjacent property just need to pull them from the many dozens of real hens that always over run me every year.
Not sure if it counts for anything but I got a coyote, a pair came in to my calling and I took the closest one with a face full of #4, it was a small male in good condition.
