I am thinking of getting another rifle. I have a 30-30, but want something that will "do it all",(not that the 30-30 can't do it, but that is another discussion). The catch is that I want a chambering/caliber that is out of the ordinary, no 30-06,.308,.270, etc. I am not looking for a rifle brand or action preference, just chambering/caliber. Any suggestions?

.243, 6mm, .257 Roberts, .250 Savage, .257Wby, .25-06, .260, .280.....

And you can't forget about the .375 Gatehouse. :p (Actually that has a nice ring to it)


So many choices, you kind of have to narrow it down a bit. Old or new? Magnum horsepower or standard cartridge? Good for elephant?

One of my all time favorites is one that Dan suggested, the 6.5x55.

45/70 old but versitile.

Savage now offers the 6.5x.284 Norma in it's Model 111 Long Range Hunter...

Very, very interesting caliber, and from what I've read, superbly accurate at distance.
 
If you like levers 356 win in a model 94BB, you better reload though because rounds are expensive, or a 307 in same rifle. Next option a 358 in a BLR.
 
If you want something a little more versatile than your .30-30, you'll probably want a cartridge that is capable of 300-400 yard shots. I would look at the .280AI.
 
i just bought a 7wsm. the reason was, that for close range deer hunting i could load it down to 280 rem level, for long range deer, or for moose hunting, i load it to full 7mm mag level.
and recoil is 30-06 like
