Hey there

I am curious if there is any 30-06 Surplus military ammo still kicking around, especially the coloured tip variety. Seeing whats out there, happy to buy some if you have it.

Thanks,
Nabs!

The last 30-06 surplus I saw was Winchester, supposedly out of the Dominican Republic, and it was garbage.

It’s all dried up pretty much. A lot of the stuff now has been sitting for decades in god knows what climate and will probably better for pulling down then using.

Quick question. I just bought a new Howa 1500 in 30-06. I wanted to break it in and sight it but I'd rather not get my pants pulled down over ammo prices.

Is PPU 30-06 M1 FMJ with a 2500fps mv OK for this purpose? I realise this is slower than normal modern loads and won't be all that great for long range target practice.

HOW you gonna do a BREAK IN ? RJ

I saw a procedure online, "shoot" me down if this is stupid. It was recommened to go with the following:
5 rounds, then clean.
10 rounds, then clean.
20 rounds, then clean
40 rounds, clean and done.

Obviously not one sitting.

With the cost of ammo .... if you can find it .... I would shot 5 and clean , then shoot 10 and see how it does and how much copper it has

Nothing wrong with M1 Garand ammo

it was made for specific velocity and pressure at the gas port

Save your brass and reload

Thank you. I'll try it. I assume that the goal of the process to see how much of a burr is left from the rifling process. Would the repeated firing also wear the burr down?

If I'm not mistaken HOWA does button rifling. That is a tungsten carbide button is pulled through the bore to imprint the rifling.
Think about it like a super hard bullet going through the barrel.
No burrs left.

I have 2 cans of 30'06 GI ball (Lake City) in en bloc clips and in original 30cal ammo containers. All in excellent shape.Bought on EE several years ago.I'd love to sell but shipping appears to be a major roadblock.Pricing also a problem. I bought it to shoot, not resale. It was pricey but such stuff does not come up often (like never). It was a FTF deal, great stuff bought by an old guy, sold by his son.No market standard in Canada since it is so rare.U.S. prices don't reflect our situation.I'll robably just shoot it when I finish up the 300rds of old loose LC G.I.ball from the 60's.

Not that rare at all.

I picked up one full can of excellent condition 1960's made .30-06 ball on new Garand clips in a .30 cal ammo can locally for $100 recently.

And I used to buy it all the time back in the early 2000's from a company called Districorp or something similar from Quebec. They used to have lots of it before they closed shop.

Here is what it used to sell for in the late 1990's early 2000's from paper ads from the time -

And back in the 1990's you could buy a .30 cal can full of surplus .30-06 for under $50 from lots of places like Le-Barons.

There must be heaps still in people's basements around the country.

I heard the Canadian government recently off loaded a heap of 1960's-70's Canadian made surplus .30-06 ball onto the US market from military surplus and you can still buy it from online dealers there at the moment.

Not true surplus, but maybe 7-8 years ago? I bought a bunch of 30-06 147g fmg that was apparently OPP surplus. I didn’t even know OPP used 30-06. Winchester white box, can’t remember price but was less than $15 a box.
