Any thoughts on NcStar?

I am looking for a decent power scope for my .308 Rem 700. NcStar seems like a kinda cheap scope, based solely on a price point. Anyone have any thoughts on these scopes? Marstar has a few for sale, and for a good price, but I dont really want to throw $200 away on a junk scope that wont hold zero for longer then 5 rounds down the pipe. They seem to have most of the features I am looking for, but I am not overly familiar with the name.

You get what you pay for. But quite honestly, they're not half bad. I own a few.

Side by side with a Leupold of the same size, the Leo wins hands down. But Leupolds also go for 3 times the price. My NC's hold zero and I've personally never had an issue with them. A few others have, and what made it more frustrating for them was the lack of after-sales warranty service.

Killercane is a reputable dealer and puts his money where his mouth is. I'm quite confident (from what I've read on this forum to date) that he would take care of any issues you might ever have with your scope. And though I'm not 100% sure, I "think" he even goes as far as to help out people who had already purchased NC's from less-than-reputable dealers in the past.

Can't ask for much more than that. ;)

Is a Leopold one of the knockoff counterfeits of a Leupold?

I have used NcStar scopes, and have seen others use them.
Very unimpressive.
You do get what you pay for. It is worth paying a bit more.

Good glass ain't cheap, and cheap glass ain't good! Most of the stuff I've heard about NcStar is that it is straight garbage. If you want a good budget scope look at a Bushnell.

Forget ncstar...spend money once and buy something better...try Falcon Menace or a Bushnell 3200 for a Remy 700. Unfortunately they cost more...

If you really cannot resist the cheap price point of the NCStar, then by all means get one and mount it on a .22 LR or .223. Anything that does not kick. That way , you won't be disappointed.

I've got 2 of the fake Reupold (sic) scopes that mimic the VXIII or Mark4 3.5 x 10 x 40mm. I have mounted them on .22LR rifles and have good results with them. One on a CZ452 Style that bumped off (over 200 gophers) some critters in SK during my road trip out West last month. Before that... this same scope was mounted for 2 years on my .223 groundhog gun and never disappointed me ever. I'm super pleased (and super lucky) ;)

The other fake Zhinese knockoff Leupold is sitting on my Ruger 10/22 and all the newbies who shoot that rifle just fall in love with the combination. I'm not complaining for $ 100 each. No warranty and no issues (yet). When they do fall apart, I'll just toss them into the garbage. They owe me nothing.... No regrets because for $ 100, I get a scope which (still) holds it's zero on a .223 and side focus ability when switching from 200 m target distances to a groundhog only 30 steps away while I'm walking.

I need that capability in a hunting (earthpigs and coyotes) situation. I really get annoyed with hunting scopes that are by default, factory set at 100 plus meters since groundhogs at 50 meters are fuzzy and I want to see maximum DRAMA  !!!! LOL

So should you buy cheap? All depends on what works for you. At least with a Bushy, you get some sort of warranty for that Kommunist Zhinese made scope. :)

Me? I'm just lucky. I'll take that over the "good looking" since I'm too ugly to deploy! :D Would I put my fake Leupolds on a .308 ? Now, I'm begging for nasty surprises...

Then again, just like on the Discovery Channel's "Breaking Point" Show...I might be tempted to try and kill off that Xhinese made Reupold by mounting it on my M14 !

Cheers,
Barney

Junk from what I can tell. Seen a few but never owned any. I do own a couple of NCStar rails that do what they should. I don't believe there is a huge difference between a $15 piece of machined metal and a $148 LaRue piece of machined metal. Glass is another story and I have used Tasco & Bushnell in the past. After I was tired of re-adjusting the cross hairs every 5 shots, I learned to appreciate a good scope. You don't need to spend $1000+ for a reasonable scope. A $350 Burris will do fine up to 200 yds. NCStar works great on Airsoft toys...

I purchased an NCStar a few years ago, don't remember the exact model but it was their top of the line, rangefinder/illuminated reticle etc. Mounted it on my Savage 116 in 7mm rem mag, it lasted exactly 5 shots and went "foggy" inside. My advise is to forget cheap glass on a centerfire.

Yup, another plus one on not using NcStar on a centerfire. On rimfire they are perfectly acceptable and had one on many .22's, but I wouldn't trust them on a centerfire.

Granted many people say the same about Tasco's and my Tasco Varmint outdid my Bushnell Banner on my Remington 700.....

Our most popular line of products. We sell thousands of units of their items per year. If I sell 5000 pieces of product, we receive back maybe 50 pieces.

NC Star makes their product overseas, however they own the plants, so they don't broker their product out to another manufacturer. They are 100% in control of production and quality control.

Their lifetime replacement warranty on factory defect is not used that often on other brand names. Further, we can honor that warranty right here in Canada. (and we have even honored it for other gun shops that refused to touch the product after selling it to a customer NOT of ours)

You'd be surprised who NC Star makes scopes for in the firearm industry. They just don't make their own scopes, accessories, rings, and mounts.

NC Star's plant is across the courtyard from Leapers in China.

Save your money and grief. If you're on a budget, wait a bit and save up an extra $100 or so and at least get a Bushnell 3200 series. They have a Limited Lifetime warranty, they have a Canadian presence with warranty/repair facility in Richmond Hill, Ontario, great glass for the price point, well made and well supported, you will be happier than spending good money on what appears from the posts, to be a less than stellar product.

I have an NCstar 3x9-40 Ill. model mounted on my 30.06 Savage. Never had a problem with it losing zero even after 75rds down the pipe. The one problem I did have was the Illumination failing on it after 25. I fixed that by removing the battery and tightening down the retaining ring inside the housing under the battery. Haven't had a problem since.

I also have a regular 3x9-40 on my 22WMR Savage as well. Works great. And lastly I used to own a MkIII Tactical .223 model mounted on my SKS. Worked well but it was mounted with a receiver cover and we all know how well those help to hold zero.

All in all I found that their scope line is great for the price you pay. Even though there are much better scopes out on the market .. but to each their own.

As NC Star offers a solid warranty, grief is easily solved by activating the warranty. They are really good with their product.

ok reviving this thread because i am ignorant on how optics work on a ar with the front site (cowitness). i have a norc m4 and at the moment I would like to keep it cheap do to this set up is my entry level into black guns. later on if i like it i will move up a notch in all snse of it. I dont care about who makes it as long as it is ok so ncstar seems like the one as killerkane says warranty is good. I need some recomendations of what to put on this. pictures would be great!! :) so if you have your ar set up with something ncstar pic and a quick review would be great.

yup i am paying for it but i am happy the handle does come off. was thinking when the cash is back> w ww.grouseriver.com/Vortex_Strikefire_Red_Dot_AR_15_p/opt-000174.htm
