Hey guys, I'm a fairly new hunter and for now have hunt with a .303 and my fathers swedish mauser. Now, I'm looking for a lighter, cheap but decent modern bolt action hunting rig. The new Mossberg Patriot caught my eye.

The 4x4 were ugly but decent rifle from what I know, and these look like a nicely revemped model. I've seen a couple of reviews from the state side but not much from here.

I also looked at the axis II and 783 which are in the same boat. I don't like the look of the axis but hear they're great shooter for the price. And as for the 783, I'm not convinced as the last low budget remingtons I've handled were complete crunchy and flimsy garbage.

I know a lot of you guys are going to suggest that there are also cheaper models 700 and the ruger american but I'm really trying to keep the budget under that. And there isn't that many rifles that matchs what I'm looking for in 308 on the EE either... Really want this caliber as I have a ton already, so it would also help the budget, and am happy with it's performance.

Thx guys.

I've had the 4X4, it was probably the most accurate rifle I've owned to date. I'm not sure how light it would be compared to what you currently have, mine was the laminate version and it was at least 10 pounds with the scope and sling. Not exactly light!

JMHO but the patriot is a much nice rifle than the other two. I've owned an Axis and traded it before even shooting it, just wasn't happy with the build quality. I have shot my sisters though, and although it is a shooter, so was my 4X4. As far as the 783, I've only ever handled one and didn't shoot that either. I think that all rifles nowadays are shooters, the technology seems to have come to a point where budget rifles shoot as well as or better than most higher end rifles. Any of the three will be more than accurate enough for hunting.

Since you've asked though, my picks would be as follows; Patriot, 783, and then the Axis. Good luck with your decision!!
