I've been considering buying a new heavy-barrel varmint rifle, in 223. I currently own a Tikka T3 Hunter (wood stock) in 22.250, which is a great shooter for a pencil-barrel rifle, but I'd like to get a bull barrel in a less expensive caliber for volume g-hog shooting.
I've looked at various other "Varmint" versions, like the Tikka & Savage, but I've consistently found that with the composite stocked rifles the length of pull is 'way too short for me, it feels like about 1/2" to 3/4" shorter than I need. The Eclipse Varmint stock is laminate, and while a touch heavier than some of the composite stock rifles, the length of pull is very good for me. I have an Eclipse Hunter version laminate stock in 30.06 and the length of pull is good for me as I'm 6'4" with gorilla length arms. The Varmint stock version is less of a drop at the comb for prone shooting but the stock length is equivalent and one I shouldered at an LGS fit well (even lying prone in front of the gun counter).
Anybody have one of these who could provide some feedback/impressions in the real world? Fit/finish? Shooting capability/accuracy? Any issues in the field?
Thanks!
