Does anybody have a really short barrelled 358 Winchester or 35 Whelen? I'm considering a lightweight 18 inch barrel 35 caliber and am wondering about the velocities you might be getting with 225 or 250 gr bullets with normal loads. Anybody got some velocity data for a short barrelled 35?

I get about 2160FPS with a 20 inch barrelled 356 and 250 gr loads, and a little over 2300 FPS with the 200 gr loads. both are factory winchester loadsBTW, the 356 is a ballistic twin to the 358 Win.

My 358 Win(Browning BLR with 20" barrel) likes the Sierra 225 gr BT with an appropriate charge of IMR 4895 and measured velocity is 2550 fps +/-
The first 3 shots measure about 1.25" center to center.
Good Luck

Great! That's the kind of numbers I was hoping to hear. Thanks.

The 358 and the 35 whelen are good candidates for shorter barrels. They don't give up much velocity - especially the short case 35s like the 358. I've had good performance by handloading. I don't have any tubes as short as 18" however (YET). But I do have four different 35 cal. rifles with 20" barrels.

If U like, check my website loading page (link below) to see what velocities I've got with various bullet/powder combos with these shorter 35s. One is like Johnny J's, a BLR/358 - also a Mauser98/35Whelen with a Shilen barrel, a Remington 660/350RemMag and a Marlin336ER/356Win.

Mike,

My buddy has an 18 1/2 inch 358 Win, a first generation Rem 600 with the little Delrin rib.

It started life a 35 Rem and has a 1:16 twist. It was rechambered to 358 Win. when he got it, and he has used it constantly for more than 20 years.

All he shoots in it, for everything, is the 250 gr Speer Spitzer ahead of 45 gr of Ball C2 and a magnum primer. Velocity is right around 2250 fps and it puts a magazine full (4) close to an inch almost every time I have seen him shoot it.

He has put many tons of game in the freezer with the rifle and that load, some of it at very long range............ and most often with a single shot.

A buddy of mine had a 7600 pump in 35 whelen, with an 18.5 inch barrel. Great gun to shoot. He said velocity drop was very minimal.

Thanks everyone for the great info. The reason I was asking about this was that I'm thinking about a ruger international 77 either rebarreled or rebored either to 358win or 35 whelen. I bet it would be a nifty little gun. For now it's just an idea though.

Whelen B - You've got a great site with tons of useful info there. Lots of informative articles.
