Anybody have experience taking their firearm through nexus?

Just as the title states - any experience with this? A google search just adds more questions. Also any Canadians heading to Custer's USPSA match tomorrow (June 7)?

I'm going to Custer tomorrow.

You're not allowed to bring firearms through the nexus lane using your nexus pass.

However, apparently you can go through the nexus lane using your enhanced drivers license if you have that. That being said, I don't know the actual rules regarding this, I just shot with a friend every month last year at Custer and this is what he did. I don't have either, so I have never personally tried.

The Nexus people at Halifax International - both US Customs and CBSA told me it was fine for Airports.

Did it last year on my way to and from the World Shoot in Florida - through Pearson.

Going to the US, I did nexus and when I met the officer to hand over my receipt, I declared I had firearms. She sent me into get them checked.
On the way home, I pressed the "I have firearms" button on the keyosk and went in and was sent in do my inspection.

Saved me time going into the US but coming home, the "efficient" baggage handlers at Pearson ensured that any convenience I gained from nexus was outweighed by the delay getting my bags.

Looks like land crossings are handled above.

I guess it depends on who you get - in February I flew to Florida out of Pearson. Used the Trusted traveller/Nexus machines. When I handed the border officer the receipt and declared that I had firearms, she gave me a lecture about not being allowed to use Nexus when travelling with firearms. That said, they did then send me in to check the firearms and sent me on my way. So the lecture was my only penalty for using Nexus.

At Calgary airport, I've used Nexus many times with firearms: no problem: just declare them, then head over to secondary for further inspection. In Toronto, however (as noted above): I got a serious lecture and they threatened to pull my Nexus card if I brought firearms through Nexus again. They also showed me the documentation that expressly forbids bringing guns through the Nexus line. When I informed them that this has never been a problem in Calgary, they replied that just because Calgary does it wrong doesn't mean I won't get my Nexus card yanked next time I do this.

Go to the Nexus website and search: you'll get your answer (but it's not one I like).

Land Border is different than airport. In air mode you will make a declaration on the Nexus kiosk which says you have a firearm so the machine knows you required a mandatory inspection.

The land border is different and from what I recall you can not use the Nexus lane with a firearm as it requires mandatory inspection.

I was told in no uncertain terms (on both sides of the border) that my NEXUS card would be pulled if I used the NEXUS lanes, with firearms, at the Niagara Falls crossings.

I have't flown with a gun since last October, but up to that point in time, in dozens of trips, I have never encountered a Nexus machine that had a question about firearms.

It asks you if you have marked "yes" to any questions on part A of the form, which is where the first question is "any firearms or weapons".

Unforeseen circumstances prevented me from hitting Custer today. Thanks for all the info.

It's curious to hear about the vastly different experiences. I did find on the Canadian site:

Restricted, Controlled and Prohibited Goods

If you have any goods that are considered to be restricted, controlled or prohibited, or if the goods you are importing require a permit, such as firearms, you may not use the NEXUS lane, in any mode.

Haven't found anything on the US side yet.

It never hurts err on the side of caution, especially with the US, and NOT use the Nexus lane. You'll only cost yourself time and not a fine, something more serious, or losing your Nexus privileges for life if you use the US Nexus lane in error.

Thanks for the research and heads up, guess I got lucky before - I'll not take the risk next time now that I know.

A word to the wise, there is a rule about firearms in the NEXUS lane. I had my NEXUS card temporarily pulled, and I was issued a hard warning. It goes on my record, but I was given my card back. DO NOT bring ANY firearm in the NEXUS lane at all.
