I just joined up and we have a clinic and small competition this weekend........should be fun, raised riding horses and been shooting my entire adult life and I have many 45 LC single actions. Should be a blast, saw it on TV years back, of course it was a US channel and thought "now that is something I would really love to try" but was resigned that it would never happen in Can........but hey, here it is and right in my closest town, SO I'm just going to have to giv'er a go..........Hope I don't get bucked off.......I'm definitely getting too old for that sh!t.........My mare is a touch spirited but that's what the clinic is all about, to desensitize the horses and see the ability level of the horsemen and women in both equestrian as well as shooter and safety aspects. Should be fun and I'll get back with some photos and updates after the weekend........she's a 3 dayer, Fri, Sat and Sun, so I'll be fairly well done by Sun night............

I shot CAS for several years and still have my kit. I also have horses. I have shot a lot around them. Always wondered what it would be like to shoot from them.

I am curious how they do this as far as the legalities? Is it going to take place at an approved range since you are going to use handguns?

Yep, all the red tape has been neatly wound up and we have an arena designated as a registered range.......however there are no projectiles in this sport, just lots of Fg black powder, using the burning embers to break balloons. Completely changes the range safety criteria.

You have the 1 horse & guns (although I'm not sure about the .45 LC being usable, I seem to remember that they "regulate and use only assn. supplied " ammo and specify 44-40) but your far from kitted out with the essentials for that sport.

To fit in with that crowd... A F450 Super Duty (or Freightliner) tops the list, after all you need something to jerk the 6 horse 60 ft. Aluminum trailer with 40 ft of living quarters/tack room in the front end . Now, you already mentioned you have one horse but you need 4 others "under training" just so you feel good when someone else's horse comes up lame and you can offer them another one of "your spares".

Now you need a Dodge 350 Cummins crewcab for the little lady to bring along full of Timothy Grass bales...(none of that second cut Alfalfa allowed here) to feed the afore mentioned nags...has to be a crew cab so she can get all the assorted hats (at least 3 apiece), boots (at least 3 pair), assorted slickers, blue chaps, purple chinks (guaranteed it'll be loaded high enough that the outside mirrors are the only ones of use to her).

I jab some friends with the above all the time who participate in the sport but they have a ball at it and like the steel shooting ground-pounder cowboys, there all good people...Have fun

Don't think I intent to get "that" involved...........and I do have another horse. The Assn specified cartridge is the 45 LC and yes one must buy and use the supplied factory blanks..........I have always run on the "lean" side where competition gear is concerned and relied more on my skills...........anyway gonna check 'er out this weekend and will get back with some news........

I trained all my horses to accept gunfire from their back when I was younger and most were quite amenable to it. Loud noises don't usually bother well trained horses............I guess we'll see with this girl.

That is fantastic that a CFO is being that accommodating. In Ontario we would probably have to build a Kevlar coated arena to ride and shoot in.....on second thought they would just ban it.....

Mounted shooting routinely held all over in the west, at fairgrounds in towns and cities, riding arena's, farm yards, basically anyplace with an acre or so of area. Att's are "Parades & Demonstration Events" that specify "no projectiles" and are usually club specific such as "mounted shooters assn.".

There are some folks here in Ontario who have been trying for years to get the sport going here. It's not easy to fulfill all the requirements the CFO has, understandably of course. But it's good you guys have it going there, would love to see some video or pictures from one of your meets.

Well, the unthinkable happened and my horse........which I haven't ridden in a year.....went rodeo the very first time I tried to get on her and ran me, hanging off her side unable to get my fat old a$$ in the saddle, across the arena and into the wall on the far side. Drove my head into the plank wall and dumped me hard really torqueing my back........Took me a while to regain my composure and feet, but I finished out the day of instruction, just cause I'm too stubborn to quit, or let a horse get the best of me........HOWEVER......Sat and Sun were a completely different matter..........I doubt I could have sat a horse all day and getting on one was completely outside my pain threshold, so I did not get to do any shooting from the saddle and two things became immediately apparent 1) I am too old and fat for these young peoples' games and 2) IF I did want to continue I will need a bigger horse.
Sorry guys, no video or photos........just a goose egg and wrenched back to show for the $400.00 entry fee............

That's unfortunate, hopefully you heal up quickly and the horse isn't too spooked itself. Accidents like that can go alot worse, glad to hear both yourself and the horse walked away. You could always try shooting from an early bicycle, perhaps with training wheels?

I got rid of my horses a couple years ago because I was done dealing with that kind of crap. Hope you heal up soon. I'm waiting for Zombie action shooting where I can go all Darryl Dixon and shoot from my motorcycle. Bikes don't spook at rocks that apparently resemble a portal to hell ;-)
