Been looking at this round a lot lately, currently have a thread in the Red Rifles forum seeing who'd be interested in an AR-15 bolt/barrel combo chambered for it. Beyond that though, would anybody over here be interested in the ammo if an importer were to bring some in by the case? I think it'd be cool to have another cheap milsurp round to go along with all the 7.62x39, 7.62x54, and 7.62x25 we've got. It's kind of the only one we're missing actually. As for what you can shoot it with in Canada, I believe there is a conversion for the XCR-L available, and you could probably get a bolt action chambered for it too if you really wanted to. I've seen some people wanting to re chamber SKS's for it or have some available factory remade in that caliber. Cool looking little round. Whats everybody think?

Edit: CanadaAmmo stocks WOLF 60gr FMJ Military Classic for $15.99/30, Bulls Eye London will bring in Hornady 60gr V-Max Steel @ $34.99/50 upon request, and IRG just added a bunch of different options available for importation into Canada.

There are sources for surplus ammo but according to one of the importers I spoke to, they haven't considered bringing it in because there wouldn't be enough demand for it. Unfortunately at the moment there is no surplus because no guns here are chambered for it and no guns here are chambered for it because there is no surplus. I'm looking into getting a bolt/barrel combo to make an AR in this caliber. $34.99/50 isn't too bad a price for high quality new production ammo, I believe it's actually a little cheaper than Hornady's 223 steel match at that price. And WOLF ammo @ $15.99/30 isn't too bad either, comparable to Barnaul 223 prices (around $9.99/20) and some of the cheaper brass cased options. Hopefully one day, someone will make a gun in 5.45x39 and someone will bring in the surplus.

Update on 5.45x39 ammo for anyone interested. IRG now has a few different options available for import into Canada from their website:

http://www.irunguns.com/department.a...er_caliber=462

Tulammo 5.45x39 60gr FMJ 20/box @ $6.22 USD

Wolf Military Classic 5.45x39 55gr BTHP 750/case @ $202.84 USD

Wolf Performance 5.45x39 60gr HP 750/case @ $202.84 USD

Wolf Performance 5.45x39 60gr FMJ 750/case @ $202.84 USD

Hornady V-Max 5.45x39 60gr 50/box @ $19.99 USD

Wolf Military Classic 5.45x39 60gr FMJ 750/case @ $202.84 USD

I'm excited to see more options becoming more easily available in Canada. The 750 round cases seem to be not too bad deal.

If you buy a case of 750 I think you'd be making out all right. I haven't bought anything from IRG before so I was looking at a post explaining their importation process etc... for items shipped to your door and you should still be making out to less than 50 cents a round, even better if you bought 2-3 cases or more. Decent price for a different round to plink with. I'm just glad more options are available now so when I finish my 5.45x39 AR I'll have a place to buy ammo lol.

who makes bolt action guns for 5.45?

No one I know of unfortunately, you'd have to get a barrel custom made.

Edit: I actually just found an email I received from Motiuk a while back saying that they do bolt action conversions to 5.45x39. I'm not sure what the process is beyond that, you'd have to ask.
