Anybody know what it is and where it’s from?





My grandfather passed in 1996 and my grandmother died in August. I found this 12 gauge cleaning brush/rod when I was doing some tidying up around the place. At least I think it’s a cleaning rod? My grandfather got rid of his little shotgun collection in the 1980’s but I guess he forgot to include the rod when he was selling the guns. Man do I wish he didn’t sell the over/under and the side by side! He may have brought the rod and guns from England in the 1930’s when they moved here (British Columbia).

That used to be the way shotgun cleaning rods were made, and while its difficult to determine the quality from a photo, it looks better than the old wood one I have.

Looks like it would have been from the SxS very European style the American versions were a little on the crude side

I have 4 or 5 old 3 pc cleaning rods but that one is a very nice one. The fit and finish of the ferrules appears to be very well done. Many of the Canadian and American ones just have the ferrules crimped on and they tend to loosen up and wobble. There are a few of them that have names stamped on the brass and they tend to be more collectable. Most of the ones I've seen were made of birch or something similar whereas the one in the picture looks like it may be made of walnut, and with a nicely turned and contoured handle. Nice.

That looks like a very decent quality English 3 piece rod and brush to me. Would have to measure the threads to be sure. Some of the higher end rods were made of ebony, so have a good look at the wood. And yes, much nicer than the pressed brass American stuff.
There's always a market for those with us old side by side fudds!

This is identical to the cleaning rod set that Track of the Wolf sells online.

I wonder of they have a contract with Parker & Hale or another overseas supplier?

I have several rods like that. Nice quality. Be aware that if it is in fact from England and given it is reasonably old, off the shelf fittings will use a different thread. You would have to buy additional brushes, mops, jags etc from someplace like Galazan to be sure they fit.

I don't intend to use it for cleaning but it does make a nice conversation piece and keepsake.

They do look similar indeed and you have given me an idea to see if I can locate the case now that I know what it could look like. Thanks.
