last year i muffed a shot because i breathed into scope...i followed a deer up and down hills for an hour and caught him side hilling me down low.. it was cold and wet and my breath fogged the scope. i was breathing very heavy and was overheating from the chase. i know bushnell has rainguard and have heard of people putting rain x on there lenses...hate those caps theyre noisy.. anybody this happened to and how did you fix it..my gun doesnt have fixed sights.

Always inhale every time you raise your rifle. I use a dab of dish soap on my scope, binoculars and eye glasses. I almost missed a shot a long time ago after I breathed on my scope, so I puckered up and sucked in a couple of quick breaths close to the lens. Fog was gone. But don't get caught buy the wife.
Where in Canada do you live that your heat from your eyeballs fogs up your glasses? I've never had that happen...and I work in the cold a fair bunch... that last -32° C was out on the rig floor for 2 hours handling tools... didn't fog up my glasses til I went into a warm room.

I have had my glasses fog up lots of times. Scope fogging most when I am coyote hunting and hike into a calling spot. Rifle is slung across the back warms up the rifle from body heat.
Once on a horseback hunt in the Yukon, I had the scope fog up internally. Not Good, as I had no back up and no iron sights on the rifle. Fortunately, when my chance came to shoot, the sun was on my back and the fogging wasn't enough that I couldn't see the caribou. Leupold repaired the scope at no cost. Still, I would never go on another remote hunt without iron sights on the rifle.

Funny; I worked on the rigs for 30 years and about the only time my safety glasses weren't fogged was the summertime. Wonder what's up with that? Probably junk lenses.
On the fogged scope thing I remember decades ago having some problems with fogged up externally scopes and learning to shoot fast because of it. Now we shoot year round in all sorts of cold weather and use our scopes to spot hits for each other when shooting steel. Never even think about fogging anymore so something changed. It's got to be coatings.
Why did you take the shot if you couldn’t see clearly thru the scope?

After hunting in the rain for a few days, things finally cleared up and things were looking great for an evening hunt. Decided to go check out a different area a few hours drive in hopes of finding some elk. Buddy and I get there and start scouting down in a creek bottom and split up. I continue to give out some cow elk chirps and while I’m waiting for a response I make sure my scope power is turned low for a quick shot in the trees. I pull up my rifle to check how things look through the scope and to my surprise it’s fogged up internally! So that buggered up the hunt for the evening and I was hoping I didn’t have an encounter with a mean ol black bear sow. Scope was bushnell elite. Sent it in for warranty and a short while later got a replacement in the mail!
I have regular glasses that I wear...I'm in Sask. No busts your chops about ' To the code PPE' for a service hand. I don't wear the wrap arounds...never have. They fog up because they wrap around and hold the heat. Regular glasses have never given me grief til I go in the Doghouse.
The shatterproof 'Safety Glasses'... yeah they fog. The other day ( extremely cold)in the pre job the toolie said "Be careful, because no one has wear the damn things today... not being able to see isn't safer"
So I am going to acknowledge your point on that one. But as a polite retort I'm asking... who here wears safety glasses when they are hunting?
We likely should, which is why I never bothered getting lazered... I spend most of my time doing stuff that requires eye protection. Not needing glasses is cool, but I really ought to have eye protection anyhow?
Or just get good glasses and I have eye protection carte blanche pretty much in my waking hours... going to stay the course on this one thanks

Youre overestimating how noisy the caps are. If the forest is so deathly quiet a deer will hear them open, youre going to hear the deer coming long before its an issue.
That said, they would not have saved you from your noted problem. Just dont breathe on the scope. I use the flip up covers to keep the scope from fogging while the gun is resting on my lap or tucked under my arm and to keep snow and rain off it. Works perfectly for that. And theyve never spooked a deer.

He doesnt say he actually shot. Its unclear. "Muffed" could mean he was unable to shoot at all.

I had about one second of somewhat good + hair position and I pulled

Bullwinkle slithered into the bush.
That day is logged into me tete forever.
I'd probably do the same thing again.

Not exactly the same but a Burris 2-7 Compact (Subcontracted to Pentax?) lost its nitrogen fall rabbit hunt. Seen eleven rabbits that afternoon. All of them quite alive and belly laughing.

I didn't miss a shot because of it, but I had a deer hunt pretty much ended because of a fogged scope. It was a cheap scope, granted, and it was my first one. I couldn't see a thing through it, and the rifle didn't have open sights.
As for glasses, it's rare they don't fog up, especially for the walk in in the morning. After sitting around in the cold for a while, and my body starts to cool off, the fogging problem goes away.

Couldn’t take a shot on a bison I was tracking cause my eyeglasses fogged up as soon as I stopped moving and raised the rifle. Half a second and it took off like a scalded cat. No bison......
