Anybody recognize this ammo?

Most military ammo does not have the cartridge designation on the headstamp like civilian ammo does. You will sometimes see part of the designation (such as "7.62" on the headstamp for 7.62x51mm NATO) but very rarely the full cartridge designation. You will see various other markings such as factory or country number, year, factory or arsenal stamp/logo, military cartridge designation (such as Mk.6, Mk.7, Mk.8 etc. for .303 British), and various other esoteric stamps you normally need to look up to interpret.

The R^L example is British MkII.

Yes that's right. Royal Laboratories manufacture Mark II. Mark II's were manufactured in both Cordite/Ball and Black Powder. I think the bottom "C" denotes cordite but I can't be sure, so I wouldn't put that into a rifle before I was 100% certain what the charge was.
