Anybody reload foster-type slugs?

Don't know where the heck my lyman shotgun manual went to????

Anyway, I have a lyman mould for making 12 gauge foster-type slugs. Does anybody have any expirence reloading these? Info, hints?

As I recal, these require fiber wads/card, the cutting of the hull for roll crimping and then a roll crimping device. Correct? Any easier way to reload these using regular plastic hull wad - maybe with the fingers cut? and no roll crimping? Thoughts?

In retrospect, I think that I should have gone with the sabot mould

I use Lee slugs and just star crimp, they work fine and mold is only about $40. They use a regular wad aswell.

Not a safety issue, but the Lee slugs don't have the rifling cast into them like the Foster's. I'm curious what kind of accuracy they would have with no spin on them.

IIRC, the Lee slugs are loaded in a plastic wad normally used for shot loads.

I too would be interested in the accuracy from a smooth bore.

Actually they are not!

They are designed to work with a standard wad in a smoothbore.

That "rifling" moulded onto the outside of some Foster slugs is only to limit contact between the projectile and the bore anyway. It does not impart any rotation to the slug and doesn't aid accuracy at all.

Then why don't they run linear? less drag one would think.
