Anybody Shooting .284 Win here???

i run the 162 a max out of a 28" --8 twist barrel at 2950 and have good luck with it, have shot out to one mile several tmes with a decent hit rate. personally i don't think it has enough case capacity to power the heavier bullets, lots of info out there for it. for the 180's my 280 ai is the go to gun, but it is a long action. another option for you is to get a magnum bolt head and run a saum or wsm.
I'm thinking resizing 6.5-284 brass would be easy enough...not cheap, but it isn't hard to get.

Shooting bench and contemplating 284? You might as well go the rest of the way and do a 6.5mm/284 like other serious benchers are doing. Great BC and bullet selection for bench. Hungry has a set of dies for $40 on EEE right now if they're not already gone. You can also buy from Norma.
284 is quickly becomeing the caliber of choice for long range target shooting, if that is your intent great choice, with a 28" barrel it will move 180 grainers at 2800-2850fps without stressing Lapua brass. Don't get wrapped-up with velocity when you run the #'s on a good ball. program you will find B.C. will overcome velocity hands down. 6.5/284 is also a great choice but is a barrel burner, should take that into consideration! as for hunting I wouldn,t pick either one FWIW.
Looking to build a long range target rifle only.....the donor rifle would be a 16 year old Savage long action that was chambered in .243. I've been wanting to try long range competition, but I don't currenty have a rifle set up for the task. I already have a Tikka in 7mm RM, so it would be convienient to use the 7mm bullets.

best advice is to play with the ballistic programs, as stated the 284 will move the 180 at 2850, the 280 ai 2950, the saum and wsm at or over 3000. then you have to deceide what kind of barrel life you want.....faster=less, less=more. there is always a trade off. if you are just getting into it i would recomend the 284, that way you can shoot a lot (and learn a lot) without haveing to rebarrel so soon. keep us in the loop. you are in red deer and that is only just over an hr away from me and i have my own 1000 yard range that you could come out to and we could show you a few things if you are interested. no matter the choice, one thing is to be sure and get good glass, nightforce is a good place to start. it seems like a lot of cash at the start but in reality it is the cheapest part of the whole game.

I doubt I'll have it done before spring, and a Nightforce scope has been on the shopping list for quite awhile now already. I've watched a couple F-class matches now and I'm keen to give it a try.

go with a 28" barrel for sure. so far as twist, if you are going with the 180"s you should go to a 8 twist. for what it is worth if you haven't ordered a barrel yet you better get on it... by the way get a krieger from ian at adams lake....17a profile...1" at the muzzle. drop me a pm if you have any questions. i am on my 3rd 7mm and have gained a fair jag of knowledge on em

go to 6br.com and read up on the 7 mm page. lots of info. the 32 is not too long. just depends what your intentions are...f class or just plain long range shooting. if you want a brake on the end the 32 gets a little long. but no doubt you will gain speed with a 32

I have one built on a Rem 600 for a LW hunting rifle. Extended the mag box to allow longer COL. It is a good cartridge in a short action that can take advantage of the whole case. But if I was building on a long action, I would probably go 280 or 280 AI. - dan
