There is legal ramifications for any firearms usage for defense. So to say not to for a 9mm jhp or a 12 gauge bird shot it makes no difference. The lawyers can say whatever they want, the "intent" for a firearm IS to kill. That's its designed purpose, we use it for target practice and sport shooting.
Also, as long as the ammo you purchase is legally acquired there is no difference between that and ball. But don't listen to me, I'm not an internet legal authority.
That aside, I have played with many 9mm jhp rounds. Never done any kind of official testing tho but there has been extensive testing with 9mm ammo and often times it over penetrates due to high velocity and does not expand to some peoples expectations.
Check out this YouTube'r. He does MANY tests on various ammos. It may give you the info you are looking for.

IMO I would not use a 9mm with any ammo for my home defense. The reality of it is most homes these days use cheap construction, little wood is used in many homes these days, thinner walls, less insulation. I would be worried about over penetration and hitting something/someone I did not intend to.
A snotty with some bird shot would be my go to if this was the purpose. Less penetration, larger surface area covered and to be honest, I would be haunted by taking someone's life. Just not built for that.
