I would like to have a "legal sawed off" shotgun :) ; buy a cheap single shot and make a pistol grip (or cut original) Also maybe shorted the barrel by several inches while still maintaining the non-restricted status.

Would make a nice wilderness/bush gun and fan range toy IMO...

Anyone done that? Opinions? what gun did you use? pics?

I actually did the same thing that you are thinking about doing. With a Remington 878 Automaster. I cut the barrel with a pipe cutter that a plumber would use to make sure i go a nice even cut. And i took about 6 inches off the end leaving it just over 18.5 inches.

And since most shotguns are centrefire then 18.5" is the legal min for the barrels. :D
I have been eyeing up an old Iver Johnson single shot break action in 18.5".

Is that the one at pullens with the break on it? I think he said the guy who owned it split the barrel when he fired it not knowing he had mud in it. Pullen chopped it down and put the break on it.

I had a single shot 12 that I had shortened- super fun - and super cheap - I think all told the whole thing including the gun and getting the barrel chopped was less than $100...

I would have chopped the stock a little more, however I have not found a shorter retention screw for the the stock.
The legal limit of a chopped single shot would look something like this.

best I can do without photoshop or a saw.

18.5" for semi-auto centrefires. Must be semi-auto AND centrefire.
18" for manually operated centrefires.

Then how do you explain the perfectly legal backpacker 410 with a 12" barrel?
I don't know the answer to the original question but I cut a Ithica 37 to 20" with a chopsaw for grouse hunting. When the registration came in I had it verified at 20" so that's what the reg says :) pretty had for anyone to give you a hard time when the reg paper is correct :D

The Backpacker is not altered, modified or shortened, as defined in the law. It was manufactured that way. There is no minimum legal barrel length for a factory original barrel on a manually operated or rimfire firearm; it is overall length that determines status, in most cases.

Basically, you can take a manually operated longarm and measure from the breechface to determine the legal minimum barrel; then run your tape measure from where the muzzle would be to 26+". That's the point where the stock can be shortened. If it is a semi-auto centrefire, add over 1/2" to the barrel length.
If the .22 or manually operated barrel is being replaced with a barrel originally manufactured shorter than 18", the cannot cut shorter than 18" rule doesn't apply.
