Anyone actually shoot 168gn bullets out to 1k ?

i've seen it first hand where it would shoot great groups up to 700m but opened up slightly at 800.....beyond expectation and even worse at 900m.

i convinced myself that the cause was two fold for my particular 308, one being driven 'not fast enough' and twist rate of 1 in 11.25 on a 26 inch barrel.

switched to a different load that shot just as good between 100-700 with 155's and the problem went away at long range.....even did great at 1200.

........then switched calibers to everything but a friggin 308........haha that helps too! espescially the 6.5's !

or even beter a 130 berger vld out of a 6.5x47 lapua........

or a 142 smk out of a .260 rem

or try a 142 smk out of a 6.5x284 ......

there is no need for a .308 win ever....except for FTR Fclass.

1000 yards

Hi folks,
today shot my old Carl Custafs 1922, 6.5 Swede with their old peep sites @ 600 yards, NO SCOPES, no cheating, LOL.
What an enjoyment, all the same loads as in my previous post , using N 560 42 grains as well 46 graing, 139 Lapua Scenar. Both working well.
600 yards hard to see, but 500-550 are very nice.
I was impressed that I did not have adjust windage much, and it was very windy.
Buying second one to put the scope on and start cheating, LOL up to 1000 yards.
Cheers.

I think the key to shooting 168s accurately beyond the range at which they drop through the trans-sonic velocity range to sub-sonic velocity is related to the amount of spin induced stability the bullet has. Apparently the 1:12 twist common to many .308 barrels won't do as well as faster twists. The fact is that there are many better long range bullets, so why even pursue it, unless you've found a large number 168s for a reasonable price.

"Dynamic stability (and I am a bit hazy on this) means that after a certain amount of time in flight the bullet, the bullet destabilizes. The twist rate has little if any effect."

Yes. This is the problem. Note that it is a time problem, not a distance problem. If you drive it fast enough it will get to 1000 yards before the wheels fall off. Better yet, shoot the 175 Sierra (same bullet with a long range boattail, and it shoots perfectly.

Yet I could shoot 168s out to 1000+ from 1:10 and 1:8 barrels (when the target is a 12" steel plate) while the guys who shoot them from 1:12s run into problems. Agreed there are better options, which reminds me, instead of wasting time on here I should be loading up my shiny new 210 Gr Matrix VLDs.

155 Scenar on top of Lapua brass, filled with varget and BR2 fuse. Works to over a 1000 but you better dope the wind right. Still super at a 1000. Also shot the 155 Palma match, same powder on nickel Federal case. Worked good too, but opens up at 700.

All coming out of a 1/12 Remington 700 heavy barrel. Tried the 168s, with different powders and primers, but my rifle didn't like them. Same for Amax.

Only pussies switch to 6.5 when they can't make the 308 do the job.

I regulaily shoot 168Gr.Berger VLD's at 1000 & 1100 yds. This is with a 300Win.Mag though. I have managed a few groups around 8", and a few around 4". I think thats not too bad. The Holes in the target indicate a nice clean round hole. No destabilizing there. I am presently gearing up my .308Win to shoot the same ranges. I will let you know how it turns out. Just have fun out there, this is what we are doing it for.
