Hi gents and gals...I am finishing up a Garand build and was just curious to see if there are any tanker or BM59 type clones out there....I want one for the next project...
BM 59's as far as I am aware, are not, as there was select-fire versions of it. It is possible, with some gunsmithing to make a conversion from an M1 receiver... but.... that may be... kind of in a grey area. Haven't done it myself, but heard it has been done.
Tanker Garands exist. Someone was selling a barrel and op rod on the EE last month... (Kick myself for not getting to it in time).
I saw one being made from a Danish M1 receiver so that it could not be mistaken for a prohib. It used otherwise original BM59 parts and apparently legal. Neat rig, but machining a hardened M1 receiver is VERY difficult. The Smith went through a couple carbine end mills doing all the interior machining work.
Do notice I said "clone".... pretty sure select fire is prohibited, last time I checked.... However,..I do like the idea of a Garand carbine, like the tanker.
legally the firearm is the receiver, using an M1 receiver negates a bm-59 prohibition as it is not select fire or named bm-59 or variant in the firearms act.
GarandGuy in the USA sells tanker kits, you can buy parts off Ebay as well. Take into consideration that barrel length for a tanker will be just sub-NR length so you may want to consider a more custom option.
I saw a Garand in 308 in a BM 59 stock the other day, does that count. It isn't mag fed, but it's a pretty neat rifle. It does have a 3 round advantage over a mag feed version.
If I had a beat up old sporter no1 mk3, I may have built one, I love the looks, a guy in the US I know did a 13.5 inch barrelled one, it is a fire ball, he rebarreled the action with a criterion barrel
