Copper is a great metal, it conducts heat and electricity very well, you can anneal it, you can work harden it, you can draw it, punch it, and machine it. But casting it as other have said is not an easy thing to do. On reason is because it transfers heat readily so as soon as you pour it into the mold it will start to harden because the heat is transfered quickly from the metal to the mold and you might have a hard time filling the mold free of voids.
Also as others have pointed out, 3$/lb is not reasonably priced. Lead wheel weight are free if you have a friend in a tire shop. Lead is also very easy to work with, but unlike one of the other posters I would encourage you to do it in a well ventilated area with full body protection of something that doesn't burn or melt too easily, something like light duty welding protection with a face sheild.
One last point if you are smelting lead pipe, hammer it flat first. The open hole can act as a cannon that will shoot molten lead out of it up to 6 to 10 feet. I had this happen to me, and luckily I wasn't standing directly in front of it and only got some minor burns on my arm chest and face. I wasn't wearing a shirt, but I did have safety glases on which got sprayed too so they did save my eyes.
