Anyone construct a "Birdshead" Grip from a Wood stock? (Moss 500/590 or Rem 870)?

Has anyone taken a wooden buttstock and carved a 'birdshead grip' like Hickok45 is using here on a Mossberg 500?

Shockwave Technologies makes one in polymer, just wondering how hard it is to make one out of a wood buttstock like this:

Here's the Shockwave Birdshead grip for Mossberg shotguns:

So if anyone has ever made a wooden Birdshead grip and has a tutorial, please post.

I did once, out of a piece of 2x4. Made it for an old CIL 12 ga. break-action.
Pretty tricky getting a good wood-to metal fit, but I'm not a terribly skilled woodworker.

I think the main issue will be in getting a shorter bolt for the new handle.

Pretty common thread/pitch sized bolt so it probably wouldn't be an issue.

I'm definitely not a skilled woodworker, but the buttstock is already fitted for the Mossy 500/590.

If your plan is to simply cut down an existing full-stock to a birds-head, it probably wouldn't be tough, just a matter of power sanding to where it fits your hand.

What I would do, for your scenario, is start by cutting the stock behind the "pistol grip" part of the stock, being sure not to cut too much off.
Then, use some kind of tool (I think a power sander would be ideal, but chisels could work too) to take off all the rough/sharp edges, making everything rounded.
From there, sand it down further and further until it fits your hand nicely.
Take lots of time to test it in-between sandings, attaching it to the receiver and even test-firing it.
Once it feels like a grip, instead of a brick, you're getting somewhere.
Once you have it where you want it, refinish the grip, and optionally the fore-end to match.
One thing to keep in mind is that you will have an exposed hole in the back of the grip where the bolt goes.

Have fun, and be sure to post some pictures of your progress.
