Anyone do Nitre/fire blue?

Do any shops in Canada do Nitre/fire blueing? Using hot salts on gun components to get that vibrant peacock blue, like on the trigger/hammer/safety etc. on the original Colt 1911's.

You can do it just with a torch, a bit harder to control the colour changes compared to using salts.

I saw a trick once (have not tried it) where someone used a metal tin full of brass shavings to better control the temperature while bluing screws....

yea - that has a bit better explanation than the one I saw ... been sticking a little plastic tub under the chuck on my lathe every time I cut copper or brass ... probably going to try it eventually..

Watched a friend do that with the hands of a pocket watch. Takes a careful touch but beautiful results.

If you need brass shavings, just stop by any key cutting shop, they usually have a box full!

Nick & Frank from Vulcan gun refinishing did some beautiful hot bluing parts for a C96 before, don't know if they are retired or not.
