I've found a couple of references to doing this while searching, but not a lot of reports on the results. I'm considering drilling mine out for better target visibility in less than optimal lighting.

Has anyone done this and been pleased with the results? What size did you drill out to and how's it been working for you? Did you notice any loss of accuracy?

I had three different M14s, and drilled them all out with 1/8 inch drill bits. Nice sized hole even in low light conditions, and did not affect accuracy at all. It is a common myth that the smaller the aperature the more accurate the sight; as long as you can "see" the rear aperature, your eye will automatically find the centre (where there is the most light) and centre the front sight. That has been my experience also in the past with flip-type AR15 aperatures (a big aperature for short range, a small one for long range) is that it made virtually no difference in my group size which aperature I was using, providing I was shooting at the same pace and in the same manner (ie: off of a bench slow fire). :shotgun:

Excellent, this is sounding very promising, and lots of consensus about 1/8".

I'm planning on starting at 3/32" and seeing how it looks before going to 1/8", and maybe I'll try out 5/32" on a spare aperture.

Use some cutting oil otherwise yer #### will fall off!

Have lots of fun doing this. Spare apertures are easy to get hold of, in case you screw things up. Always have spare parts... my old coach advised me!

Cheers,
Barney

I bought a surplus Garand many years ago from Century Arms and someone had cut the top off the the rear aperture. It worked very well.

I drilled out my last one as the old peepers aren't what they used to be. I could not be as precise with it, but it was MUCH easier to quickly acquire a target.
