for revolvers, i prefer the pachmayr rubber grips, esp with magnum loads, and because most revolver grips are for display only
for semi autos, i had an older sig 226 where the top half of the earlier production grips were smooth, and bottom checked, much nicer to use than the full checkered sig grips.
i agree with those who prefer smooth grips, on the basis that checkering/grip tape if one wants, should be needed more for the front strap and the backstrap than the sides of the grip frame, or none at all.
check out when holding a handgun, how the web of the hand around the fleshy part below the thumb and your base of the 4 fingers are really doing all the gripping work (coinciding with the front strap and back strap) the palm of your hand and the fingertips coincide with grips, but do less work.
imho, it's not whether there is checkering, but how well the grips and grip frame fit your particular hand
