Anyone ever have a Norc M14 chuck an extractor?

I was out with a friend last week popping off a few rounds.
All was good until this happened.

Yeah, yeah, I know, Chinese quality, etc, etc.
You can see that the extractor claw is missing, and the ejector button is protruding out of the bolt.
Anyway, is this a common issue?
His rifle has about 60 rounds only though it.

My Norc M14 has several hundred with no issues, and I dont recall hearing about this from others.
 
Done this right in the middle of 300 yard (Match 5 deliberate) string at Mons Range West back in the summer of 1994. Lost my extractor in the grass while in the prone position. What happens is that by sheer fluke and geometry, I was stuffing a cartridge into the magazine with the bullet nose just forward slightly and touching the feed ramp (protects the hollow point ogive). :D

As the cartridge is propelled forward, the back end of the rim pushes up on the extractor and PING goes your extractor and bolt parts! :eek:

AND that's why I recommend that all you M14 lovers put together an "Oh Shzt Kit" in a ziploc bag somewhere in your shooting ruck / bag / sniper notebook for you M25 DMR shooters. Head over to that Treeline place or 762firearms and order a couple of sets of bolt innards. I even do the same for my ARmalite that I shoot in Service Rifle matches! :D

BTW, I pulled my rifle off the line after the RSO cleared me. I walked over to the ammo truck (it was a 5 quad) and with my "oh shzt kit" handy, removed my bolt and re-assembled the innards quickly. I had my thumb press on the extractor while the spring loaded ejector was held down as I pushed the bolt forward on an exposed corner piece of metal found on the rear bumper of the ammo truck. :)

For those of you wondering WTF an ammo truck was doing at an ORA Service Rifle match; back before April 25, 1995, the ORA was given an ammo allotment by the DND. So I shot my M14 with FREE :eek: AMMO!

That would be nice!

Could this be caused by riding the bolt forward instead of letting the spring snap it shut? Shooting last weekend I let a friend try my rifle and after showing and telling him not to ride the bolt forward, he immediatley proceeded to ride it forward :mad:. Pulled back the action and the round was left in the chamber.

Not really a riding the bolt issue. Riding the bolt may cause issues with bolt not properly going into battery.

The extractor issue is common amongst M14s caused by an extractor pin extending past the bolt body. So during regular loading, the rub of the case below causes the extractor to be ramped out of hole.

Yes but unfortunately we're the "new military" and with that alot of fun got taken away. It's still fun but not as much.
 
this happened when cleaning my Garand in the spring, had a small screwdriver with a patch on it cleaning around the bolt face, when the bullet guide got pushed down, the bolt slammed forward on the screwdriver and disassembled the bolt in the rifle. |Scared the hell out of me as both springs, the extractor claw and the pin that held it all together was laying in the bottom of the gun.

Managed to get it back together but my heart skipped a beat when I saw all those parts laying around.

Don't know about "clipping" the spring to make it shorter, my Norc m14 never needed any of this unnecessary tweaking crap with the gas system or dicking around with shorter springs etc. It just performs week after week with everything thrown at it.

The bolt will do as your picture shows if it can't chamber a round for whatever reason and encounters a lot of resistance. Hopefully all your parts are there for reassembly. Get the tool from the m14 doctor, will save a lot of swearing to get it together.
 
Looks like you have hardly any grease on there as well, at least from the pics.

Should be able to see grease on the rails and the side of the bolt, lubrication on there will allow a little more movement if things are wonky when riding a shell home.

Just my 2 cents.

I think shortening the ejector spring keeps casings ejecting clear of scope mounts like the ARMS 18. I don't know any gas system '#### arounds' but I'm sure there are some :D
 
gas system #### arounds i'm referring to is unitizing the gas system.
My $500 norc shoots 1.7 inch groups at 100 yds with reloaded 150 grain ammo.

Good enough for me, but not others who demand better, and supposedly unitizing the gas system helps with this, never mind the over all movement of the bolt at lock up when firing, which you can't predict or do anything about.
 
We never did find the claw itself, but found a pin that popped out.
I guess he will have to put an add on the EE.
 
It does happen from time to time.
The spring shortening that is referred to is because the Chinese spec on the spring is different than USGI and the Chinese is quite a bit longer than it needs to be ,as is the extractor spring.
Be sure to check that the stom does not protrude below the bottom side of the bolt when you get you a new extractor,this helps to prevent the bolt from tossing the extractor.
You just found the weak link in the garand/M14 rifle.
