Guy next to me at the range shooting Sellier & Bellot 22lr. Heard a louder bang than usual, he had a magazine rectangle shape outline on his hand in black-ish powder, and very slight broken skin. This ammo seems pretty dirty.
Another round from the same box sounded weird and it was tumbling when it hit the target, making a large hole.

What do you guys think? I said probably don't shoot any more from the same box/lot haha, maybe even avoid the brand all together.

I had a Remington Thunderbolt do the same a few months ago. The rifle was a Toz which has the gas escape holes, so no harm done. I attributed it to just a fluke where maybe the brass was a little thinner for some reason.

That occurs more often than most people realize. Usually it is bad brass at fault... a weakness internally formed... Sometimes it is more of a problem in semi - autos.

Problem is he still has like 1000 rounds, and is now scared to use them. No issues before swapping to this ammo or after swapping off of it.
I notice the new S&B ammo are all branded "canadian match" with the canada flag on it, maybe this was just pretty old stuff. Still, wouldn't expect there to be issues.
Personally never had such an issue after thousands and thousands of cci sv fired. Gonna stick with that I think.

Why not contact the factory or very least the distributor/retailer he purchased from, show the blown case and request a refund or replacement ammo. Worst they can say is no, but I’ve had this happen a few times and either got refund, swapped for another brand or got a replacement case (usually in the form of a certificate).

Cleaning Chamber ?

I had a similar OOB a few years ago with my Marlin-60. It almost blew the rim off, just a tiny bit holding it together. I was using Fed Auto-match and prob 100+ rounds w/o cleaning. It was just before I got a Teslong and was not aware of the possibilities of Carbon ring build-up. I assumed it was due to the 'ring' holding the cartridge out a fraction. It seems the ring was 'blown away' by the OOB to some degree as it did not occur again that day, tho it could have been case failure as Guntech said. Guess I'll never know, wish I had the Teslong back then.
BTW, I'm glad I don't shoot Left-handed with a semi . . .

Was the rifle in question a 10-22?
Blow back actions are prone to out of battery firing and similar case failures. Dirty chambers , dinted/ damaged rounds , improper circling of the charger will result in the round not chambering fully.
This is a 17HMr that fired out of battery , due to improper charger cycling with a moderately dirty chamber. Shooter cycled the charger like a bolt gun rather than pulling it back and letting it go. No injuries , but shooting glasses where impacted by debris.
The magazine was shattered .

Might have squibed on the failed case, and 2nd round after was 2 rounds going into the target.
If that was the case, probably has a bulged barrel now too.

No, the Canadian match is not the de factor standard for S&B .22. You can get Canadian match, regular S&B in the green/white box, or the new S&B HV rounds in the gold/black box. So your friend had Canadian match?

I have shot about maybe 400-500 rounds of Canadian match so far without issues.

From what gun was he shooting it?

It was the regular s&b in a sako finnfire II I believe. The first round that tumbled happened first, then later thr blown up one.

Had it happen once with a Ruger Mk II . Bolt failed to close completely, problem solved by a cleaning that should have been done in the first place. I knew it was hanging up a bit; that gun and I were one.

Had a bad box of Armscor (spelling?) from Mexico back in the 80s that had three go off in a Lakefield Mossberg 64B. As an inexperience shooter I just kept shooting them until they were all gone.

I could be wrong but I always thought Armscor was from the Phillippines. Think some lady owns the company. I remember my sister in law, who is Filipino, mentioning something about that...it's like one of the only, if not only gun and ammo manufacturer there. But I could be mistaken...
