Scoped M78s.... There is technically one M78 scope style that is by Valmet. It is a new top cover that has a Valmet/Tikka 412 rail on it. Only thing is that it will not be a precision rifle as the AK top dust cover is really not firmly secured to the receiver. So... dont buy good optics for it as it will still be a loose grouping. Here is a pic of the rail on the rifle. With a Valmet 412 mount & rings - a fellow CGN'rs gun. This combo will only work with a machined receiver.

Cover pics... good luck finding a cover & rings...

Now, on the flip side at the end of the M78 production there were the stamped receivers instead of the machined ones (easier to make). One of the US importers took off the wood and replaced it with black plastic replacements and scoped the receiver. This gun was renamed and stamed the M78/83. (it is also importable into Canada as it was originally an M78 - good luck finding one) An unscoped version was used by Arnold in Commando.

I am by no means the foremost authority on this stuff but I beleive that I am correct with the above info.

Oh yah, there are other non-valmet AK47 mounting options that include drilling out the side of the receiver and mounting a rail onto it (like the 78/83), and a trunion mounted rail... good luck and you might just wreck your Valmet by trying these things out.

Excellent post, thank you very much!

What kind of groups is that Valmet in the first picture capable of with match ammo? I would guess around 1.5-2 inches at 100m ?
I assume that mounting a rail to the side of the reciever will yeild better accuracy results than dust cover mounted scope. Anyone ever tested one of these setups at the range?
Are there any 78/83 Valmets in Canada that you know of?
Thanks again!

M78

Yes a side mounted scope should actually hold zero. I dont know of any of these in Canada... I am sure there are some but I dont know of any.

My best 100Y group with iorn sites is 4" with good ammo out of my M78. Since the top cover optics wont hold zero there is really no point in my opinion.... enjoy iron sites..... or really loose groups with your scope.

As I think I said if you can find a M78/83 in the USA you can 100% import it as it was a M78 first.

USA no longer issues export permits for M78's, so if someone wanted to import one, it would have to be from somewhere else.

You know there's some sort of surprise when you open a picture and you find a picture of YOUR RIFLE!

I wasn't ready for that. I was going to send pics but you already have them!

As far as groups I have never bothered to see what it can do. I am truly embarassed to say that.

M78 is an amazingly accurate weapon I must say...A good friend of mine, who actually served as a sniper in Afghanistan in 80's, test fired this weapon for me with .308 Win.white box 147 gr FMJ resulting in 3 shots ended up as a clover leaf and one just slightly off. It was awesome, since he fired the weapon with iron sights at a 100 yards target ...His opinion was: "Very good gun" and valued more to me, than any online review...Unfortunately, i didn't save that target...
