I got to wondering, since the non-restricted Squires Bingham M116 and the prohibited Ak-22 share the same action, would it be possible to buy the various parts for the AK-22 which are legal in canada and fit them around the action of the M116? I can't find an exploded picture of the AK-22 anywhere on the net, and I was hoping some old grandfathered fellow might still have one and be able to post pictures - or just tell me it's not possible.

Is there a difference in the barrel for instance - to accomodate the gas block?

Save yourself the trouble, unreliability is a know trait of these guns
You'd be better off building up a krinker plinker kit with wood if you just want it for looks

Check your PM inbox....just to add the M16/22 is also prohibited. The gas block is for looks only, there is no gas hole in the barrel to cycle the action. It is the same as the m16 as far as it's semi auto operation.

Sb also made a semi auto sporting rifle on the same action. I was wondering the same thing about it. If it is not prohib, a guy could build the stock for it and have an exact replica of the prohibs... not that its a big deal but, shows another stupidity in the laws. As if we needed more!

The Squires M16 and M16R are not prohib. Nor are they restricted.

The Armi Jager and Kassar Ap74's are restricted.

I know because I have several of each.

Just all the AK-looking ones are prohibited. The M116 and the M116R are non-restricted.

I know that the gas block is cosmetic - but there might be some divets drilled in the barrel etc that might be different (for set screws).

I was on CFC's website to doublecheck. Without getting into "public" detail I was told Squires m16 and AK22 were prohibited. Milarm in Edmonton has them on there wall as well tagged prohibited. I am going to call Firearms Canada and ask them to get this checked. But on the site this is what is listed. I only cut and pasted what is discussed here.

Former Prohibited Weapons Order No. 13 (in effect since January 1, 1995)
The firearm of the design commonly known as the AK-47 rifle, and any variant or modified version of it except for the Valmet Hunter, the Valmet Hunter Auto and the Valmet M78 rifles, but including the:
(z.22) Mitchell AK-22;
(z.23) Mitchell AK-47
note it says Variant

Firearms Prescribed as Restricted
This list of restricted firearms specified in the December 1, 1998 Criminal Code regulations includes all firearms that have been restricted by a former Order in Council
• The firearm of the design commonly known as the M-16 rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the:
Any 22 calibre rimfire variant, including the:
Mitchell M-16A-1/22,
Mitchell M-16/22,
Mitchell CAR-15/22, and
AP74 Auto Rifle.

I hope after my call to CFC I will have good news for us all. My edit... I called CFC and Milarm. Both confirmed that the 16's and AK22's are PROHIBITED the 16's listed as Restricted is an error on the website!! If you lucked out and got it registered, it was an error on CFC's part. There is a good chance that if you sold your firearm CFC would flag it and you would not be able to sell it, and you would loose you registration as well. This is what I was told so I am passing it on.

Mitchells is not the same thing as Squires Bingham. Just because it has the sights and carrying handle of an M16 does not make prohibited. Squires Bingham model 16 absolutely non-restricted.

M77: Your quote from the website still says the m16s are restricted, not prohibited.

Only the Squires Bingham M116's are non-restricted because they are essentially the SB Model 20 with a different stock and carry handle. They look virtually nothing like a real M16.

I put a model 20 stock on my Squires 16 to keep CFC happy. I am just passing on what I was told over 5 yrs ago (and again today) when I tried to register my Squires M16 and AK/22's. It is starting to look like it depends on who back east is processing the registration.

I've had a few M116s transfered in and out of my posession. There is no way they can tell you a stock is going to change anything about the gun.
